Choille, sad to hear ole cat passed, but so happy it was peaceful and in sleep. I imagine you feel that way too, despite also feeling sad. A long and lovely life and simple pain free passing is all any of us can hope for. Hugs from Liverpool.

Not been around here much as we are trying to get the lottie looking respectable before we disappear for 2-3 weeks for hols with the kids and GSs.

Today I chopped the majority of the raspberries down (very old and not very productive) and it's amazing how much more evening light we have on the plot currently. Tomorrow (weather permitting) I'll start attacking the couch and bindweed that have been growing under them. And OH will start the marathon task of digging up the roots!

I'm also trying to deep dig the compacted soil we've been walking over... I know you ain't supposed to walk on the soil, but we didn't have much choice in the spring - it was wet, but the weeds still kept growing, so we had to walk on to weed. :o

Yesterday OH planted some lettuce and cut and come again salad stuff where we had some of the onions. Today he managed to find the netting to go over the strange contraption we had in place and netted before (the original netting got used with the yellow mange tout peas that have just started producing). So it's a pain to get at the weeds, but if any of the seeds grow past the slugs it at least keeps the pigeons off seedlings! :rotfl:

We also chopped the haulms off the second early spuds as they kind of looked as if they might be getting a bit blighty. OH dug up one plant, and there's loads of lovely looking spuds there. Prob cook them tomorrow. The rest we've left in the ground for now, but will dig up some and share with our neighbours later this week. Any left just before we go away we'll dig up then and take them with us. We didn't grow a huge amount of spuds, as we only have a half plot, and about half of it was still taken up with garlic and onions when it was time to plant the spuds. The main crop is in garden at home, though around half of it has failed - looks as if something ate the tops off before the tubers could begin to grow. Slugs? Pigeons?

Yesterday I weeded the herbs on the plot, and OH planted the French tarragon we brought back from Tyddyn Sachau (really fantastic nursery just outside Pwllheli). We also have a bigger plant to shove in the garden at home too... Or might put it in a big pot so we can overwinter in the front porch to keep it frost free. I'm keen to get plenty of it growing, as I love a chicken with cream and tarragon sauce recipe that OH cooks when he can find tarragon in the supermarkets (not very often :( )

OH about to take his guitar and head for The Pilgrim where they have an open mike night on Sundays. He's working on a load of songs at the mo, but there's one that is close to my heart that we put on YouTube ages ago. Not perfect, but first time we tried to vid it. I think BetterDays might enjoy! ;)

Humm had a weird evening after I last posted... OH went off to the Pilgrim, and after a bit I went out to the front porch to have a ciggie... Went to open front door, found no keys! So shut all porch windows, and the door. Found had left my lottie sheepskin boots in there, so put them on instead of shoes. Also relieved that we kept a woollen blanked folded up over back of one of the chairs, so wrapped that round meself...

Sat out there for about 2 hours waiting for OH to get back home with keys! First thing did when he got back was thrust blanket at him and rush past when door open to get to loo! :o

Turns out next door have spare key, but I didn't know that. <roll eyes smilie>

Alex how is that incubator going, hatched any eggs yet??

Yes, first try we hatched 12 out of 33 quail eggs which had come through the post. Mother Nature was fair and we got 6 boys and 6 girls.

I didn't realise how violent the boys were to one another - they have plenty of space but it's brutal now they're mature! We are down to 2 - one who received an injury the week before last so was isolated in a hamster cage indoors for a week, and one of the others (who today has blood on him - whether he's injured himself or is not well, I don't know yet, I'm going to see shortly but need another pair of hands so have to wait for DH). He's already in a cage inside the other space so he and the other one can see each other but not fight, so it's not an injury caused by the other bird.

The ones I have had to cull I have done the deed myself.

It's been a steep learning curve and I won't hatch any more until I have individual accommodation for the next batch of boys. DH has promised to build me suitable enclosures but it looks like I will have to pay for my own shed.

The girls are fine, all in together and we're currently getting 5 eggs a day from the 6 of them. They don't fight, there's no feather pulling, they jostle one another out of the way if I have mealworms to get to me first but that's it :rotfl:cute little things!

How are yours doing? I've found that my boys are not even really eating size - they are 8 weeks old now. I think I want to hatch some jumbos next! DH has said that the eggs aren't big enough, although they are normal size for quail eggs.

We also now have three chickens up the top of the garden, they were bought about a month back at 22 weeks old. An egg a day from each of them too :j

I did tell you Alex lol..

    what quail have you got??

I got some due to hatch at the end of the week, and putting a load more into one of my other incubators tonight..

You might find its the Hen's that can be bullies too..

TBH there isn't much diff in size between the Jumbo's and the Japanese quail..
I'm still learning, and I think it is trial and error with them.

Don't forget it is will be easy to go over 50 birds with the quail, so you will have to register with Defra... you will also find out who is your fallen carcass pick up person is, and not all of them do birds... you will need someone who deals with Category 1... Just put the birds in the freezer until you have a bag full to be picked up..

By all accounts the weather is going to get hotter and more humid as the week goes on, and then rain Thursday night/Friday morning...

Had a weird scare last night myself....

Loaded up the bonfire bin with mainly green stuff and retired indoors, not sure whether it would continue to burn or not, but the smoke was going across the field, so OK.

Later, when DW put the hens to bed, she commented "Phwoar! Your bonfire is kicking out a stink!"

    I just laughed.:rotfl:

Ten minutes later she called from the kitchen, "Why are the fire brigade here?":eek::eek::eek:

I rushed out, but soon realised that if the FB were coming here, they wouldn't be doing it backwards!

Turned out they were just using the entrance to turn their engine around! <huge sigh of relief smilie>

"Unexpected items in the bagging area!" ...... like grass clippings.

By golly, my new (old....very old!) Honda doesn't half pick up and pack the grass it's cut. :D The ex-Pete's Mum's Mountfield leaves a lot behind. :(

I think it must've been hiding in someone's garage or shed for a long time as it's around 25- 30 years on the clock and the tyres aren't worn. Starts first time, every time, too. :)

We find grass mulch so useful under hedges and around trees.;)
