Worn out! Builder chap arrived, but as DW was still up in Brum, I had to wear 2 hats today and there's still the watering to do.
I managed to get an appt with the Building Control chap for Wedsnesday
, but the 'semi-retired' structural engineer's line has been busy every time I've rung it, so the chances of getting both here at the same time have reduced to almost zero.
Still, we have got the electrics to the garage disconnected, removed, and most of the roof off. The beams are somewhat woodwormed, but I hope to treat and re-use them elsewhere one day.
Even the chippings from the roof are being recycled in my pots.
That just leaves about 20m2 of tarry stuff......!0 -
Hope somebody can help. Went for a walk tonight and found a Kestrel with a broken wing. Spoke to the vets and I've to take it in in the morning ( if it makes it).. I know this is a tight wad question but will I have to pay, as funds are very tight at the mo.

I don't know if you have to apy, but I thinknot as it's a wild animal.
There are usually folks who will look after them - bird folks. We used to have a wild life hospital in Ullapool wher you could take animals & birds - they relied on donations. If you keep the bird in the dark & quiet that should help - they get so stressed out that's usually what does them in.0 -

Looking at your sig, things seem a lot better than they used to be! :T
Had a call tonight from DW. At the end of it: "I'll get off the line now, because I know R (DD2) is going to be ringing you to ask all about credit cards..."
"Ah," I thought, "so I haven't escaped telling her the facts of life after all!" :rotfl:0 -
Just been watering in the slug nematodes - it's still quite light in the western sky with us. If the weather is hot this week, wanted to do it before the clay soil set solid.
Looks like a lupin has anthracnose so I pulled it out. No doubt the relentless wet spring hasn't helped.
I've noted leaves on some plants have a yellowish tinge, so am thinking so much of the nitrogen and other nutrients has got washed out. Reckon a foliar spray with epsom salts would help.
Looks like one of the verbascums is going to flower, I brought them with me as seedlings in 2011 so not before time! That said, getting mediterranean plants to flower in Scotland isn't easy.0 -
Oh just logged in and saw the thread nearly at the bottom of the page, so out of lurking to bump it up. My mini daydream continues with me working hard in the garden. I'm disappointed with my progress this year but I can't seem to get on top of certain things such as bind weed and ground elder! I'm also frustrated by years of over planting and allowing lovely shrubs to get far too big. I'm pruning lots but doesn't seem to have the impact I want. Maybe this garden is never going to be neatish and tidyish!
I'm also still recovering from a minor op but can't stretch and bend too much, argh. My poor garden!
I've also had an epic fail with my toms which got far too leggy on the kitchen windowsill so I've chopped them back and they're recovering but who knows when or if I'll get fruits
Good luck to everyone building and working hard in other areas.0 -
Fay - welcome. You sound like me, but are probably more productive.
You can hack most shrubs back - I think most folks over plant & plant too close. It's not a big mistake & can be remedied with a sharp pair of secuters [sp?] & what a powerful , rewarding feeling that is, cutting windows in the shrubbery.
Having a neatish & tidy garden is not really an attainable ambition if you have a busy & interesting life - that's my defence & I shall fight anyone to the death who challenges that.
I could never grow toms, but I don't like them, I am actually pysically allergic to them, so possibly I'm not meant to grow them.
I bought a wheel barrow on Gumtree for £15 a new/ used a few times big job plastic bodied one & sold a jiggered midgied machine for £150 so a good day - a rewarding one. It was so low cloud here this morning & mizzling - thin rain that soaks you through to your knickers in a few minutes. Went over East & it was 32 degrees - I was wearing thick wooly soaks & a fleece....I think I lost 1/2 stone in sweat.0 -
I didn't post yesterday because I was asleep!

First worked on clearing materials from the building, then took the van up the M5 to fetch DW, who was by then at the Outlaws' ranch, having travelled down there with DD1. We arrived back here in time to complete a last clearance of the site so that it's tidy when the council's Building Inspector calls today.
Then there was blooming watering!
The garage work is coming along well. There looks to be plenty of headroom, which was my main concern, knowing how much insulation we will have to add to the floor to reach habitable U values.
Meanwhile, for your amusement, here's a picture of the geese DD1 has at her rented house in Brum. They just waddle in from the canal. The neighbour has tried to construct a netting fence to keep them off his lawn! :rotfl:

It doesn't look like B&Q are doing World Cup wheelbarrows this time.
That's where mine came from in 2010. As soon as we were knocked-out, they fell in price to £16.
Wish I'd bought 3 of them now!0
