Although I eschewed an arranged marriage, I've always thought that it was very sensible that in Asian marriages, it is as important to check out the in-laws and get on with them, as it is for the partner.... :)

Anyone get plants in the sales?

I picked up a distressed Christmas Cactus for 99p and this Cordyline for £3, both from Homebase. A good drink and foliar feed with epsom salts will hopefully cheer it up and it'll then go into the conservatory until June!

Oh no, DH and I would never have been allowed to go ahead.

When people who know my parents and know/ knew dh's ...as seems to happen in this small world , find out they have been known to laugh until they cry.

Its about as opposite a match in political/ parental aspirational outlook as possible really. I think the only child in law that my fil likes is my husbands brothers wife. I haven't met her but I hear great things about her.

I was the first, and the first non of religion....though none of the others are either as it turns out. I got the brunt of the aggro. That I am so 'other' in background and aspiration other than religion is further unhelpful.

I actually like my in laws as people, just not as family! We deal with things very differently, and I am only prepared to go a little over half way these days, not turn myself into someone else. If people aren't prepared to meet somewhere near middle ground its their prerogative. Mine is to wave DH off to visit them while I get on with other things :D. I'm not going to take on more stress over the situation. :o. My family are bad enough, worse probably, so I'll deal with them and leave DH to his....:rotfl:

The status of my DD2 and her partner isn't fully known to his parents. Revealing it would be too financially risky while he's at uni....and his course is 5 years long!

Technically, he's Hindu, but he's the first from the family to regard religion as optional. DD has learned how to field telephone conversations with his Mum. For example Mum might ask something apparently innocuous like "What are you having for dinner tonight?" and her answer mustn't be "Spaghetti Bolognese," or any meat dish at certain times. :rotfl:

Luckily DD is very adaptable, so she has an encyclopedic knowledge of Bollywood and she paints traditional henna designs on her arms and legs as if she's done it all her life. ;)
