Lir, I know you don't like them much, but if holly won't grow and box isn't an option, cotoneaster simonsii like I have at the front seems to be totally bomb-proof. To me, it has many of the qualities of box or lonicera hedging, but with none of the down-sides.
True, we watered ours occasionally to assist it through its first (very dry) summer, but even the plants that were hoiked out by drunken revellers, survived and recovered.
In winter, we often have a huge, 7 metre long puddle in front of our place, which covers more than half the width of the road. You can imagine the spray that is hurled from that, complete with salt once we have frosts. That's going to be the ultimate test!
I've had the Parish Council on the case with County for a second time recently, but I'm not holding my breath. Recent enquiries to a lady who lived in this house 20 years ago confirmed that the puddle was here then! :mad:0 -
My new plant love is Streptocarpus
Those are OK if you have plenty of places to grow them out of the direct sunshine.
Certainly loads to choose from these days. Dibleys probably have a web site.

You are truly the font of all gardening knowledge
My gran lives in a complex with a warden and one lady resident grows the most amazing house plants on all the window ledges and these are simply stunning at the moment. She also has a lot of plants that have beautifully coloured leaves.
In our house we have oodles of spider plants, cacti, ivy and purple oxalis and we could do with a bit more sparkly and oomph in our house plantsTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Halloween must be over as there are people letting off fireworks, sigh.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Same here, thankfully the moose (our springer spaniel, that we rehomed in May) so far hasn't reacted. I ordered some Zyklene for him just in case, but it still hasn't been delivered, grr. Sorry, this isn't the pets forum, is it?Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -
One benefit of living in the middle of nowhere for decades is that we've never had a trick or treater (we didn't used to have such American commercialism 30 years ago) nor do we have fireworks.
In fact, apart from the seasons you wouldn't know one day from another :rotfl:
No visible signs of Christmas, New Year, Easter ............0 -

As good as, what with the dogs, cats, chickens, geese, foxes, sheep etc we have between us!
I think I've said before that we used to take our Border Collie to the firework displays when we lived in the city. She wasn't in the least bothered or interested, but we accidentally discovered she was a passport to easy parking. There was a RSPCA dog home close to the site, which was blocked off by the police, but seeing the dog, the traffic cop made the wrong assumption and directed us there.....to free parking!:rotfl:
After that, it became routine. I'd say "We've got a dog!" and the police would wave us through. The kids thought it was hilarious. We never lied, and they assumed.....
The dog just slept in the car, oblivious. Flashes? Loud bangs? Meh, people stuff!;)0 -
