Rummer have you thought of square foot gardening, to make more of less space? Plenty of info about it on the net (or I have a pdf of the book)
It is a square foot gardening approach I use in my beds atm as I want to get the most from my space, just trying to decide what crops to pack inTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Better Days, I feel for you. I like the doer-upper, which seems to have a good layout, but the huge tree might make the garden very shady. Looks as if there were more until recently!
DD1 is also considering a doer-upper, though not at the asking price. Massive garden on it and wayward trees as well! (link removed now)
The pneumonia jab thing only lasted 24 hours with me. I was still a bit tired yesterday, but OK now.0 -
Dave That house looks as if it has fabulous potential!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

i am totally gobsmacked at the prices !!
my son cant get a 1 bedroom FLAT for that !!
BD... i think that doer upper house is ready to go, no chain im guessing.?? oh my, i could get stuck into that easy peasey [unless walls are falling down......:o]
ive restored/done up every house ive lived in , on a scale of 1-10 of "needs" they have averaged 2  but the bigger the challenge the more the rewards...;):D0 -
Ohh Alexelisey it's really nice to be 'thought of' - perhaps your nice thoughts permeated my thick head :rotfl::rotfl:as I'm getting nowhere fast with houses this year.
Wot's 'square foot gardening'? Not heard of it before.
alfie 1 how would you score that house on 1 - 10 for the amount of work that needs doing?
Dave that is a lovely light house and I love the photo of the garden - it appears that the EA didn't even dare to step outside! - and I see exactly what you mean about the trees in the one I am considering - will need to work out which way is north and go from there.
On the plus side today - I was so hyped up with the house stuff frustration that I made a big pot of green tea (helps me cognitively) and attacked my DLA 'change of circumstances' form and it is now finished. Woohoo.
Right - dogs out for a wee, then bed for us all. Sleep tight. It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

ive been sat thinking what i have actually paid out for doing this house up [we are not talking "country life" standards here
:D]
and i think i sourced, scrounged, was gifted everything
round here the posh change thier furnishings like i change my knicks :rotfl::rotfl: and i "offer to remove" it out of the kindness of my heart0 -
BD. by my calculations the front faces north east and the back south west.
any thing like decorating is easy. what is there is def do-able . cavity wall insulation and looks like not nec for new windows.. this is assuming this will be sold on ? they have obviously? been able to fell trees and topping the remainder looks feesable..id get those stumps ripped out tho.
i have watched so many transformations by my friend with her properties [albeit many £s] and often think...ooooo that looks good and how to do it for nought...
it was seriously deja vue [??] with LIR's dairy to my friends kitchen... i think it gave her an insight to what hers might look like when i trooped her round there..:rotfl:
i wish i could do interior design on a shoestring for people . tho my house is not a good example as my tastes are..... well.......... different0 -

I would love to help you decide, however a) my own efforts in that direction have been pretty rubbish so far :rotfl:and b) I don't know enough about your climate to know what you can get away with. If that list of things is what you'll use most of, perhaps try a 0.6 x 1.2m bed of "experiments" - more tender things that need a bit of fleece protection to start with? (don't like this modern metric stuff really, too old for it). It's only half the work of a 4x4 and may not need to be raised too far (except for ease of access).
BD - square foot gardening is the creation of a chap called Mel Bartholomew who basically said using long rows for veg, all the constant weeding, and having to thin seedlings is ridiculously wasteful and too much work, so he condensed everything to fit into blocks of 12" by 12" (hence square foot method). Usually these would be set out in blocks of 16, in a 4x4 square, so that the whole bed can be reached without stretching or walking on it. Because they're smaller they can be raised to any height so are great for people who can't bend easily and, in theory, they can be moved as they don't need to be more than 12" deep either. No double digging, no faffing about, a much smaller area to weed and easier to have near the house to get regular attention rather than stuck at the bottom of the garden and neglected. :T"...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
