  • Never thought of that Alfie.... was thinking we might 'lose' the small one, as that one is in the loo, and we are knocking that room through into the bathroom... (with that beautiful canary yellow bathroom:p).

Thinking about it, it would mean losing a fireplace..

  • Oh Alfie :( Not a good homecoming.
Other than the woman in the cottage with the rugrats who have, obviously, never been trained, we've never had a problem with any local dogs. I guess they've grown up with fowl & just don't tend to bother with them. We often had problems with holidaymakers & walkers, though, who'd just let their dogs run loose & were unable to control them
Maybe some of the chickens have just roosted up somewhere scared to come back tonight. I hope so, anyway.

Is there much left to do, Rummer?

Proper job on the barn, Dave.

It's a bit hard to see, CTC, but although it's cracked the wall doesn't look to be bowing so that's good.

Is that the end that gets the prevailing weather - wind & rain?
If it is bear that in mind whatever you decide to do.

When we first moved here & the builders had finished the work on our place they went to work for someone newly arrived at a place a few miles away out on the open moor.
The end of their house was slated but the guy was adamant he wanted to take those down, have open stonework & put a large window in.
The builders tried to tell him the slates would have been put there for a reason but he insisted so off they came, a window went in &, off course, the wind & wet drove straight at that side of the place & caused all manner of problems.
The house owner tried to claim bad workmanship but had to drop it. He hadn't got a leg to stand on having been told more than once that it was a dumb idea by local builders who'd worked on places around here for decades.
It's one reason why we always used guys who know about the local vernacular building styles/methods.

thanks itsme, ive counted 5 dead bodies. and the ducks a gonner now. so that leaves 5 but i couldnt bear looking as it was getting dark aswell as being depressing. stan and goosegoggins were petrified. the chooks were the rescued chooks and daft as brushes so i dont think theyd know to go up a tree/bush. the 2 remaining are huddled together [ive just checked them]
  • I could easily really lose it with some dog owners.

Around here there are common rights so, similar to your way, there are always sheep & horses roaming free. There are loads of signs asking people to keep their dogs on leads (particularly around lambing time) but most just seem to ignore them.

Then their dogs take off after something & frequently end up going over the cliffs.

I can remember some local lads going to help retrieve an injured dog & the owner was so bl**dy rude to them that they vowed they'd never help one again.

It's the main reason we never had dogs. We were much too busy with the business to devote the time to training them properly. We deemed it more sensible to not have any rather than end up with them shot or over the cliffs.

A penumbral lunar eclipse will take place on October 18, 2013, the last of three lunar eclipses in 2013. It will be visible from the Americas (for the end), Europe, Africa, and most of Asia

    ....... apparently ! :D

    p.s. cant sleep :(
  • Alfie... When something like this happens you go through every emotion... I just hope that who ever the owner is, and when you confront them, they show some sort of regret etc, about your poor birds, not like the people who owned the dogs that attacked our pigs, it was all about not having their dogs put down...

Didn't lite the fire last night, and flip could you notice it... But We don't want to lite the fire every night, as we need to make the wood last... as we haven't got a load... will also start asking around about pallets... I know its not good to burn them, BUT we are really on a very short AND tight shoestring this winter, if we want to get any more work done on the house, PLUS try and keep up with bills, Starting to get fed up of cheese on toast or whatever meat me have in the freezer - dinners now

    Alf, awful news, *hugs*

    Lir, hope all goes well.

CTC, too late for this year but, if you do have any spare time this winter, at least you have trees for logging next year. In the meantime try to stay warm and nurse that cold/chest.

Started planning MIL's house clearance, DW will be staying there for a few days soon to sort out while I hold the fort here as it's been a bit manic at times keeping up with sales.

Choille, well I've been snapping like you said and at the start of day 3 of the 5 day free business listings I've managed 141 listings so far :j. Allowance left, 3 days to go, 49,859!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.
  • Alfie I'm so so sorry *hugs tight* what a dreadful thing! I hope you find out whose dog it was so you can have words, although it won't bring the birds back :(

Not feeling too bad here at the moment, it comes and goes, but maybe something will come up. Perhaps not this year now, so I shall be glad when it comes to an end.

    Hugs to all.

CTC it wouldn't be a disaster surely if you needed to have the gable end rendered in lime plaster? Around these parts, many houses are made of mud with lime plaster finish. So long as the walls can breathe, it works fine.

Ghastly out there this morning, but they're promising much better in the late afternoon. Again, I'm glad I put in another hour on the mower last night, as the grass growth is showing little sign of slowing.

Contractors here were working well into the night for similar reasons, though the maize harvest is a bit more important than our grass! :)

    Alfie how ghastly. :(.

Went to London yesterday, think it went ok. Have to see him again in about a month. Next time I might drive and pay congestion charge, just not sure my car is reliable enough.
