Does it not mean comfortably walk that distance as in it is not painful or a challenge on a bad day?
As I understand it from the phone calls I've made it they mean not walk that distance unaided or without severe pain, but people interpret it differently. I really feel difficult about this. I know I am almost alone on this limb here but I don't want to take what I don't need just to save me a dime or a hassle. If I'm doing it to save the congestion charge it seems the wrong motivation.
I'm rather proud of the independence I maintain, though I recognise it would not be possible for everyone and I am lucky we can afford that independence. I don't want to take a step where I think of myself as 'disabled', and however I look at this I cannot help but think while I have some fight in me I should fight. Otoh, if I'm paying for taxis all over the show then it becomes a bit cutting nose of to spite my face!
Yesterday I was fine, today I have had a quiet day and were I forced to be very active would have struggled a bit, but I haven't used a stick, I just haven't done much.
Its very difficult, because I know not everyone sees the problem with applying, either psychologically or from the point of taking what is not for the sake of personal need politically that I do . Its a personal position that cannot remain for ever static.
Yesterday for example, I would have been financially stupid not to use one, and yet, IMO, wrong to use one, had I had it.0 -
Good that one chook came home to roost, Alfie. Will there be more, perhaps?
I started digging another hole today. Not very exciting, but it's going to be the base for the shed, which is currently occupying the space where the new kitchen will be. So, moving it is a priority job now.
In other news, I've planted about 40 or 50 geranium phaeum in the streamside area. They are virtually indestructible and animals like them, even if they look dull. I have two: a mucky maroon and a mucky dark blue.
The stream 'garden' is proving very educational, which is another way of saying that roughly half the plants I tried there are dead!:o We did have a very dry time this summer, which certainly didn't help, but I'll be experimenting with other appropriate and tough things in the coming season, like ajuga, alchemilla and pulmonaria.
The foxgloves I planted survived!0 -
DW was effectively disabled for a few years due to two arthritic knees. She couldn't get a temporary blue badge or any support as on a good day she could manage the minimum distance. Thankfully, after two ops, she's is much better but I get the feeling that the hurdles have been raised too high for the honest applicant0

Yes, this is the issue,
My GP was coaching me in what to say on the form when he told me to apply and I felt the whole thing smelt wrong.0 -

No, you're not alone on a limb, LIR, I have the same thing with my pressure problems. Some days I can be almost normal (well, :rotfl: you know what I mean) while other days I can't lift a pan, wear shoes & have to go up a dress size because of swelling. It's inconsistent.
I have a friend who had a nasty accident which left her struggling to walk. She had a mobility scooter but now uses a stick. She walks her 'block' each day stopping as & when necessary but she hasn't had a badge since early after the accident. I believe now she wouldn't actually get one. Everyone automatically thinks she claims all the benefits but she never has.0 -
LIR a close family member went through a similar thought process as yourself in relation to the badge. Finally they decided to apply and they have reflected that they feel their independence has increased as they can get themselves to places without relying on others. I think it is to your credit that you are weighing up the options and thinking things through.
Did I mention that my bathroom is finishedTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Alfie - so sorry. It's awful, really bad.
LIR - Hope you're okay.
Rummer - you lucky duck. I'm coming to your house for a baff - I'll bring supper.
Rhiwfield - Hope you get loads of sales & people actually pay for wot they bid on.
Just told our roovers to go F after I'd tracked them down. They have messed me about for months.
Just told my GP to F herself after 2 months of neck problems & no referral & 8 years of a other untreated thing - just lost the rag eventually - went off like a bomb today.
CTC - you have a serious problem with your house - stop work on it NOW - Seriously. Will PM you our number.0 -

I had the same thought with that gable-end...that said, you see Grand Design type peeps just epoxy stainless steel ties across and jobs a good 'un.0 -
Choille it sounds as if you really have had quite a day of it! If you are ever down this way then you are more than welcome to visit and sample the bathroom
When our heating broke a few years ago I took a wash bag and towel with me when I went to visit friends :rotfl:

I have been known to wash my hair in a public toilet - the sink, not the pan - I should hasten to add & dry it under the hand dryer, but that was on holiday!0
