There were 26 goldfish in my last larger pond, and 6 after the heron visited, mostly the black ones.

After that, a couple of koi, until they became too large. I had no filter, pump or anything like that. Koi are fussy beggars.

If you just have a few goldfish, or similar, a plain pond will be fine.

Don't involve yourself with sticklebacks though! Some kind child donated some to the school pond and they bred like crazy. They ate everything else and left it a stinking, barren pool. Then I think they started eating each other......

I pumped-out the pond in February, sticklebacks & all, left it to freeze and re-filled a few weeks later. No more problems. :D

Good to know CTC is OK even if her friend isn't. ;)
  • We will have to top up. :).

Then, I don't need to say this I'm sure but, if possible don't have it in direct sunlight. It's not just evaporation but sunlight + any nutrients or phosphates in the water = problems. That's when you really would need some form of filtration.

Adds filter to definite list. :D

Heron won't be a problem here davesnave.

Weather change and I am fatigue able again. Aw well, I still feel ok, just not all systems go. I'm getting some housework done.

:oDavesnave, I was just wondering, do you or Dw have any interest in irises? I have some pots of lesser known irises I was given on long loan. I'm going to have to divide the clumps soon in the future (I chopped down long leaves this week so was noticing this) and plant them out which brings me joy but it occurred to me from rummers thoughts recently that the 'best' gardeners have been generous and the rest of us have little to share. These are small offerings, as the pots aren't huge, but I could share some of them....

Otherwise I'll plant them out here and forget which are which.:D

Hi everyone, just trying to catch up. Enjoying the pond talk. Don't have a pond at this rental after having a pond for years. Used to enjoy watching the wonderful dragonflies buzzing around the pond at our last house. We had both frogs and newts in the pond, but the fish always died. Unfortunately lost a lot of frogs last winter in the prolonged cold spell.

Dave, very sorry to hear about Daisy :A, it is not always easy to get the timing right it sounds like you did and you have done the last kind thing you could for her.

It seems ages ago but we had an enjoyable, if exhausting BH weekend with brother and his family. On the Sunday we trundled over to Aldeburgh. My SIL kindly bought a camping bed and I rested on that behind the wind break and everyone else went into the sea. It's lovely and warm they said!!! They spent hours splashing around and were even joined by a seal at one point. Great fun had by all.

Dad passed away in 2009 and I had honoured him by keeping his ashes along with those from much loved pets :D . My brother wasn't wholly happy with this arrangement. So as Dad was born and spent much of his childhood in Aldeburgh we scattered his ashes at the shoreline at the end of our day there. It was actually very peaceful, hardly anyone about and it felt right thing to do. Dad used to swim in the sea daily year round, also did a lot of sea fishing at Aldeburgh so he is back where I know he was happy.

Weather has been glorious here this week so I have been lying out in the garden on the sun lounger determined to enjoy every last ounce of summer that I possibly can. Pouring with rain today :(

The tomatoes are stubbornly refusing to ripen, can I pick them and put them on the windowsill to ripen?

The house purchase is going ahead, but after taking note of all your kind advice and having a long chat with the surveyor we dropped our offer by a further £7k which the vendor agreed to. Spoke to solicitor last week to update her who then informed me she is off on her hols for a fortnight. So a short hiatus.

Alfie - we are also waiting for a plumber (every day since Tuesday) - the kitchen sink is leaking again. Perhaps we can communicate by smoke signals to see who is 'lucky' and gets honoured by a visit first :)
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Lir, thanks for the offer, but may I pass on the irises? I have three or four clumps here which are in urgent need of dividing. :o They are splendid, but I will stick with what I have, because they are definitely an 'icing on the cake' plant and I still need more cake!

Good reduction there Better Days. It's worth giving the house a trial for a few years, but I'd not rush into major changes myself until I was sure of it, or of seeing my money again.

Thanks for your kind words on Daisy too. I have planted a colourful Elreagnus pungens maculata where she's buried. We needed a tough, evergreen that wouldn't harm chickens, as that ground is destined to be our next hen area. ;)

My parents' ashes are scattered on a rather well known stately estate in Wiltshire, at a place known as Heaven's Gate, overlooking the big house. I forgot to ask permission, but they often collected leaf mould for the garden near there and they didn't ask either! :rotfl:

Once my pond is in :) I am going to start looking for some really tall white irises we had at a previous garden. I really miss them.
