Our plums are doing fantastically well
In the past few years we have had the occasional fruit but it has never pollinated well and what fruit has developed has often been blown off in high winds. This year however I took a small paint brush out and hand pollinated the tree and due to the warm summer it looks like a bumper crop :j
Our raspberry plants are in a raised bed however they seem to have migrated onto the lawn  and there are raspberry plants popping up all over it. Maybe it would help if we mowed the grass more often. I think I read a while back that you are meant to take them out after a few years (5 atm), should I be thinking of removing them? They are not where I would ideally like them to be and I am keen to plant different things in that space so it wouldn't phase me to remove them if their time has come
Dave, please can you remind me (for the umpteenth time) which weed control fabric you would recommended?
I have decided that all the side garden is going to be growing soft fruit and the back garden will be pretty flowers and herbs with maybe some pretty veg scattered through. If all goes well I will be getting an allotment at Christmas time which is where I am planning on growing oodles of veg.
The front garden is still a real irritation and I think I will remove the remaining plants around the edge and let the grass grow to the edge as I have no urge to weed it and I could just about tolerate cutting the grass.
We will also need to think about removing the pond so it is not a danger to Rumlet. It is tiny and not exactly a main feature of the garden we built it mainly as a wildlife area as it is an area at the bottom of the garden tucked well away from everywhere, mind you it would make the ideal place for a den
oops now I have written a novel I am going to go and plan some more......Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
evening all
im typing left handedmy texts are hillarious :rotfl:
well i had the sheep sheared and what was embarrasing was that he seemed to get em done quicker without me:rotfl:
then i tacked up new little pony for friends GD and took her round the grounds. she has not really got the attention span yet to take it seriously....:D
SinL then asked to ride new cob, so i said yes but bareback. he got on but found it hard to be light [parelli] so me being me said "i will show you". i asked him to give me a leg up and bearing in mind i cant use my right hand very welli went up easy enough but SinL [rugby player] was a tad enthusiastic and didnt STOP giving me a leg up and shot me clean over the horse... :rotfl::rotfl:
the first time in my life it has happened and i had an audience that im supposed to be showing how to ride/handle ........ my friend was in a collapsed heap hysterically laughing....:o :rotfl:
then it suddenly occured to them that i MAY have injured myself.... i hadnt ,just a dented pride.
i got back on and took him through his paces ....i swear that hoss was giggling tho..

thanks for the heads up about the botanic gardens, will keep an eye out for that, would love to go and have a look, one of our friends is a gardener there...by all accounts you don't have to pay to get into the plant sales part.
Sheep, 'IF' we wante to get 2 in the spring, and put them in the large garden part of ranch, would we have to get rid of the buttercups??? are they poisonous to them?
also do you know what the score is with registering movements etc with them???Work to live= not live to work0 -
Rummer, the weed control fabric we use is Phormisol, but I believe Mypex is much the same.
We have damsons, but no other stone fruit this year.
I went for a walk in the rain today, not that we had much, but with the wind it felt like a wet day. I was really out collecting some laurel for hedging, but it was good to wander about in the woods and see whatever was there. I was really surprised by the diversity of stuff growing under the conifers on the edge of Flashdown, which was the very first Forestry Commission planting (1919) I'm not sure why it was like that, but maybe the density of trees was much less there. Most of the conifer woods here are dead at ground level.
Fortunately, on the old estate, many laurels and rhododendrons were planted which have now become a real nuisance, so over the last few years they've been cutting them down...exposing lots of suckers around the bases which are ready rooted. Well, it beats paying for them. The ones I've just planted were from seed I collected, but I can't wait that long again!
The sheep that come here for their winter holiday live with our buttercups OK.0 -
Buttercups...
Well....
They cope, but they aren't great. The cause cumulative damage ( depending on what type of buttercup) and impair fertility. They can also cause photosensitivity and minor sores.0 -

So long as buttercups don't improve their ability to jump! :rotfl:
Nice size bathroom you have there, lir, and that house is good old size too, CTC!0 -
LIR the bathroom looks great so far, I hope you are pleased with it.
CTC It is great that you are doing so much of the work yourselves, it will make the end result all the more satisfying, not to mention the money saving
Alfie At least all that was hurt today was your pridehope the hand heals quickly.
Dave Thanks for the reminder! I will hunt it down as we are going to create a new raspberry bed and it would be good to not have to weed it all the timeTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0
