rain is here with gusto now, so rain stops play up the ranch...

we have now slowly started on getting the old lime mortar, and paint:mad: off the pine end wall, chimnley is going to be taken down hopefully next weekend ( weather permitting, and with the help of friends), we have decided to take the paint/mortar off ourselves, as the wall is a mixture of stone and brick, we are going to have it sort of rendered in lime mortar rather than have it all exposed.

It will also save us a quite a few pounds on not having it sandblasted.

Hard to say but if they are eaters, you can always use them for cooking and if they are cookers, it gives you an excuse to sweeten them with syrup :D

Worth putting some into storage to see how they keep, and i'm sure the pigs will have the ones you dont eat yourselves!

You must be feeling a lot better about the ranch now that you're making progress :)

    This may be useful http://www.abundanceedinburgh.com/apple-identification-chart/

Is there an Apple Day anywhere near you?

Last year tree fruit harvests were DIRE. This year that have been very varied IME; some trees laden and some nothing depending on when they flowered.

Certainly no plums to speak of here, just the odd few, this is the first year no gages. The frosts and winds were simply too much and too late. Apples are good though. Figs look set to be good. I need to be ruthless and cull.

My pears put on a lot of growth after the summer prune, so I know now I did prune too early. Probably about now would be better.

No sloes at all. Some plums set very well but dropped almost all the fruit in the July heat wave.

Yes, I don't think we have any sloes either RAS. No stone fruit seems to set well, and the few I have seen take colour surprised me...there was no drop easier here.....small apple drop though.

Also, haven't been many pollinators about in the garden that I have seen, and far fewer ladybirds. Year of the green fly

thanks for the link Ras, but they all look the same-ish to me:cool:

Is there anywhere, where I can send an apple, with leaf etc attached to see if they can identify it ?

Definite inside day today. More messing about in the bathroom. Cart before horse we messed about with paint and put the sink up to try and work out how high we want taps positioned. The inside of our bathroom reminds me a little of the outside of ctc's house funnily enough. :). White , shades of grey and texture :).

  • Love all the pics :j

CTC there is usually an apple type festival at the botanic gardens in autumn where you can take apples to be identified, plus there's nice trees to buy and cider

I'm hunting for a bath tub ATM, we need to replace ours and I want a really outrageous colour, seen a 20's green enamel one on t'internet...CTC was your suite up at the ranch yellow or am I thinking of someone else's I've seen?!

Local auction wasn't up to much today - seemed a lot more peeps there and a lovely grandmother clock that was there from the last time, having not sold I presume, and which I left a bid for went for a small fortune to someone else. And a lovely blanket I put back down in a local charity shop yesterday was gone by the time I went back for it today...meh!

On a brighter note my bargain (ish) chesterfield furniture was delivered today and I'm so pleased with it, so comfy, and can get two dogs on the sofa with me again! It makes me want to redecorate right now and put a bit more TLC into the house, esp as I've got a quiet week on the farm...I've also been watching Kirsty's recent tv programs on upcycling etc so I'm all full of ideas :D
