This is good for generating long term revenue and growing a user base but the days of people owning massive desktop rigs are pretty much gone now.

Not sure about that. PC gaming is still pretty strong and the PC component stores are still doing well.
The ps4 hardware will dominate the xbox and the fact its a single hetrogenious address space fore the gpu/cpu will make programming a doddle not to mention all the damn near bare metal access to the hardware.

I think there is a danger in looking too closely at the hardware specs. All of this is irrelevant if the APIs aren't up to scratch, and by all accounts Direct-X is light-years ahead of Sony's Open-GL in optimization. Expect the Xbox coders to be able to get more out of their console initially at least.
If I were a software publisher with the majority of my resource constraints/costs tied up in developer time I know what platform I would target first.

My prediction is ms funded exclusives aside most games will develop for ps4 first and release early then if the sales are there optimize for the lower end xbox hardware. Meaning the ps4 will get a wider choice of games and sooner.

To be honest since all development is done on high end gaming PCs it may end up being six of one...

I don't plan to buy either unless something truly compelling comes out. I can't remember why I bought a 360 but I still fire it up for Madden or Guitar hero, games I can't play on the PC.

COD Ghosts on xbox one will use dedicated servers for online gameplay while the same hasn't been announced for the PS4.

Xbox one pre-orders will ship with the new Fifa game so if you plan on getting a PS4 and fifa then you'll only pay about £30 less than an xbox one.

Launch titles for xbox - http://www.computerandvideogames.com/425409/xbox-one-launch-games-line-up-confirmed/

    Launch titles for PS4 -

Still haven't changed my mind yet from what I thought originally - xbox one looks the better choice for me as the early games list is superior and the exclusives look more interesting to me.

Wonder how much the figures have changed now. Sony seem to be trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory so far.

Drive club now also delayed till next year. Watch dogs delayed for all formats. The xbox one has a superior launch range by far.
  • Do you really think Drive Club was going to propel the PS4 on launch day?

In your opinion. It's obviously subjective based on what people like/prefer to play.

    PS4 still has Killzone.

Just to add in a little competition to the console duo

What do you guys think of the "Steam Machines" From Valve?

PC based 'console' in your living room.

Personally I think it will be a nice bit of competition to Sony's and Microsoft's efforts.

Yes definitely, be nice to some competition, hell I might even be interested.

To be honest there isn't really a need for a steam machine as you can do it now anyway - buy a smaller case and have steam running in big picture mode. It always seems to be "coming soon".

The best thing about consoles is that the developers know exactly what they have to develop for so they can't just get lazy and leave things to run smoothly on only the best and most expensive machines.

Hope everyone is enjoying their new consoles, I'm loving my xbox one. Very happy with the game choices available to me and looking forward to the future.

That's why Valve is doing the "Steam Machine"

It's basic concept is 3+1 computer systems (Low, Mid & High) with defined specs that programmers can develop for, like the console market but for the Pc gamer and PC's in general.

So they are not just going for the "But can it play Crysis?" jokes (where the user needs the most cutting edge expensive hardware available just to play the game with graphics set to low!) But have a game that will have a constant experience over the 3 levels of systems.

The "+1" is a small "SteamOS" Linux box that will eventually sit under the TV in the living room (with your big main noisy Windows games Pc in another room). You use the low power Linux machine to stream your Windows games from the Big PC to your Steam Box connected to your TV.

  • Why do so many people whine at PC gaming, It is no where near dead I play loads of games online and there are always full servers. In fact a lot of games are kept alive long after there usual shelf life thanks to user mods .

You do not need to update your system every month to play the latest games... My pc is 3 years old and it runs everything on ultra at 1920 x 1080 on a 24" screen including any new games BF4 is latest I have tried, and the graphics are much better than the ps4/xbox one.

And the big old noisy desktop in the corner?? Mine is almost silent and I will quite often plug a HDMI cable in and use the HDTV. Most games have support for using the microsoft xbox control, you can even use the wireless after buying the adapter for about £7. And FPS are so much better with a mouse and keyboard.

I have had a 360 since it was launched and it ended up being used as a media centre and that was it.
