Flying with Jet2 and children. Seat allocation

I've just done the online-check in with Jet2, and they have allocated us the seats:
My husband and I together, our son(4) and daughter(2) each in one different aisle, away from us.
If we want to change seats, we have to pay (per person, each way!)
Last year when our daughter was still a baby we couldn't do the check-in online, so when we checked at the airport they sat our baby and me together, then my husband with our son (he was 3 then).
But this year we have to do the online check-in and they have split us three ways. If we want to see with the children (they are 4 and 2) we will have to pay. There are lots of slots available, so the only reason Jet2 has not allocated seats closer together is to get more money out of us.
I don't need the 4 seats in a row, but 2 + 2, so that each can look after 1 child would be reasonable.
Is it even legal to put the children by themselves?

Your children will have to be accompanied. Either call them or raise the issue at the check-in desk before departure. A 4 and 2 year old cannot be sat alone on a flight.0

Just pay and know where you are sittimgtravelover0

I wouldn't be paying, the airline won't allow your 4 year old and 2 year old to sit unaccompanied so will move you, raise it with the check in staff when you get to the airport.
ETA: See here, someone with a similar problem, scroll down for update at end

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

No!!!!!!!
One child must be sat with one adult, Jet2 know this, their cabin crew want this, they can't charge you extra for it.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
This makes me SO cross and is ANOTHER money making scam to get more money out of us.
I've had a discussion with someone on Tripadvisor about this exact same issue.
We have 4 kids who are now aged 10, 13, 13 & 15. Once they hit 14 they don't have to sit by an adult. Family holidays cost us close to £6k so if we pay for seats it just bumps the price up even more.
For the past 3 years we have flown with Thomson/First Choice and have always been sat together without paying a penny. But next year we are going with Jet2 and we have been advised to book (pay) for seats. We don't want to do this.
People then criticise you because you discuss it and say that people who ask to move so they can sit by their kids have a cheek as they should have paid for their seats like everyone else!
If everyone refused to pay we wouldn't be in this situation.

I would imagine that if you just went along with it it would not be long into the flight before they put you together!!!!0

I wonder how many 13 year olds actually want to sit with their parents.
If you don't like Jet2's policy why fly with them?0 -

Or parents that want to sit with their 13 year olds0 -

You can just pay for 2 + 2 anywhere. Believe it or not you don't have to be sat next to your kids. They can be directly behind or infront of you, or 2 aisle seats opposite each other still count as next to each other.0
