    Whither Moonwax...?

I'm pretty sure that this thread looks different from yesterday - some later posts don't seem to be here anymore.

I'm not sure if any of them were by Moonwax though.

One thought has struck me in the course of this thread - linked to the fact that so many people seem to be unaware of the legal issues around taking children out of the UK.

It's very naive to say something along the lines of "Unless she's marrying a US citizen, she can't stay in the US, so you don't need to worry about her not bringing the kids back".

The first part is pretty true; the second part isn't.

One of Las Vegas' selling points is the quick and easy "no questions asked" marriage business.

You can marry anyone, of any nationality, in Vegas. If you have written consent to take your children out of the UK, you can take them with you to the new spouse's home country, without any difficulty.

Even if that happens to be one of the countries which has very strict requirements on this issue (e.g. Canada). And even if the new spouse's home country isn't a signatory to the Hague Convention.

Is an actual reaction to my posts, so please don't rely on anything I say. :)

I don't think they normally do PM though?
  • they do? I understood that to be the job of the immigration officials at the airports.

I have been asked for the letter once by the way - at Luton airport immigration when we came back from France with my niece. It was because when they checked her passport, she has a different surname to us.

However I've travelled for 12 years, every year, with just my DD, since she was a baby, without my OH for various reasons, and I've never been asked for any kind of letter of permission from her Dad for her to travel with me. It wouldn't occur to me to get one.

Yes Check-in Staff can (and will) stop you from boarding. In a smaller airport it is the same staff who check you in and take you through the gate to the plane. At any point they can raise a query as to whether you can board that plane. Ultimatley the decision will come from higher up but check in will be the first to notice anything dodgy.

I remember being told to ask children questions relating to their birthdays or family members. Ask if they knew where they was going etc

Still waiting for the kids to return from the Disney part of their trip I'd imagine.

If they had gone only for 5 days they'd be home now and I'm sure he'd have posted an update, the fact he hasn't to me would suggest they aren't back yet.

Still no Moonwax; I'm sorry he hasn't had the decency to post even a cursory response.

Hope the children are OK though; that's the main thing. x

I thought that post 322 on this thread - from Moonwax - seemed to be intended as his final word on the topic.

I also hope that the children are OK.
