I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid nearly 7 years ago. My symptoms were mainly weight gain, sleeping for up to 30 hours at a time, depression, itchy legs, hair falling out etc. Since i've been on thyroxine (150 mcg) my weight has dropped (albeit slowly) I went from 8 stone, to 11 stone in 6 months and am now stable at 9 stone.

My hair doesnt fall out anymore although it is now very fine. I never really feel ill at all anymore. It affected my whole body and when i first started on the thyroxine i thought it was making me ill. Don't be alarmed if you suddenly feel very hot. Apparently its not normal to wear woolies in summer (which i used to do).

All i have left to remind me i have the condition now are white patches of skin on my hands and feet where the pigment has destroyed itself and occasional unbearable itchy legs. These are possible side effects of hyperthyroidism.

Watch out for some cold remedies, they say on the packet not to use if you have thyroid problems.

I hope you feel better soon, dont be afraid to go for a blood test if you start feeling tired or sluggish. it took a year before i was on the right dosage.

Well it is a year scince I was first diagnosed and my levels are now in the acceptable range weight gone down a fraction but it is so HARD to lose it !
Feel less tired and less moody than before found it very hard to toleratre the hot weather we've had, skin a lot better my hands were extremely dry but seem ok now.The process is very long and getting levels correct doesn't happen overnight.
    bye hoo
  • Hi

I just wanted to say that in my experience most GP's are not very tolerant of 'expert' patients who are knowledgable about their long term conditions.

For example I have had hypothyroidism for many years and can pretty accurately assess my doseage levels from my symptoms, gradually becoming unable to cope with day today life as too tired - doseage may need to rise (can be temporary); feeling a bit whizzy all the time - doseage may be too high.

Recently I went to see a different GP in the practice as I felt my doseage was incorrect, a blood test 2 months previously had been boarder line for increase and my symptoms had increased. He had the cheek to state that it could not possibly be my thyroid and therefore I must be depressed!!

He went on to state that he had never heard of anyone being on my level of thyroxine 250mg let alone increase it. I personally know of 3 people that have had to take it at 300mg daily for periods of a few months to a year. He just kept stating that it was outside of normal parameters and so the symptoms must have another cause - depression.

Well I have vowed never to see this doctor again. My understanding is that the parameters are guideline ranges so some must fall outside that 'normal' range either above or below. I have been self medicating for the last two months and feel heaps better.

    Take care all

    Me.
