It took just under a week for me to get results as well but it can take up to a year to get the correct dosage sorted out.

I finally ended up seeing a specialist and things seem o.k. now.

It gets dispiriting if you think of it as chronic or lifelong so I try not to think about it too much other than to make sure I take the medication.

    Good luck
elona do you mind if I ask what medication and dose you take?
    bye hoo

  • I have been on Thyroxine for over 3 years now and no problems, I feel fine, AND the real money saving advantage is the free prescriptions for life as it is a chronic disease, not so for an over-active thyroid problem, apparently this can be rectified so not chronic, and no free prescription
If I screw my eyes up tight I can just about see where you're coming from

  • I have gained weight but I think that the cakes, chocolates, biscuits and lack of excercise is the cause.

I am 24 and i was diagnosed for Overactive Thyrodism when i was 19- when my first born was 9 Months old. Luckily the health visitor reconised this, i was shaking and panicky like a mad women, at that time i was just over 4 and a half stones and being just 5ft 1inches i get very edgy, sweaty panicky, The only way for me to led a normal life is for me to keep on taking my medication. A lot of people mistake thyroidism as a depression i tried taking Prozac, they dont seem to work on me but when i carried on taking my Proplythiouracil i am ok. I am a demon wthout it, i am constantly panicking, tearful, and always shouting at the kids along with anyone even strangers on the street. and Very impatient.
I have been offered to take the ion radioactive to see if i would have this parmamently, but that would mean i must not have long contact with my kid for 6 weeks. which i dont think i could bare to do right now. Anyway it aint gonna cure me its just to see if i will have this illness for life. So that can wait.
For me the only way is to take my medication daily and strictly, to keep me and my family happy.
This must be a very common problem, well in my area anyway, cos everytime i collect my precription in most chemist they never seem to have enough and run out. so i always have to go back with the chemist iou card to collect the rest.
I remember going to a Superdrugs once, Not exactly in the local area. To buy a book about Thyroidism and the lady was amazed as apparently so many people buy this book.
I am lucky that the thyriod was not passed down to the kids when i was carrying them too. As this can happen, the thyriodism can be passed on to you unborn baby and the side effects can lead to autisum (have i spelt it right?) So be alert with this. as i was not told about this till my son was born, when he was to take the test ( it would of been nice if i knew before hand just in case.)
Just keep on taking your medicaction is all i can say. I am now 7 and half stone with a tyre just like other mums. and i feel and look much more healthier and norished! Rather then the 4 and a half stones.

    Very depressing.
