Very depressing.
They say my dose is right according to blood tests anyone else have this problem?
When I was first diagnosed , my sister's boss , a doctor , said the weight would fall off me , but it never happened. I've seen my own Doc about this on several occasions , but she says my blood tests show my thyroxine levels are within the normal limits and wont increase the dosage of thyroxine I take.
Do you eat healthily and exercise? I have to admit that any excess weight I carry is more than likely due to the fact that my diet is mainly rubbish and I spend far too much time on the sofa with my laptop

I had a large goitre removed just over 12 months ago, i started taking thyroxine 6 months ago as i was getting classic signs of underactive thyroid although my results said i was borderline. However, the doctor thought it wise to put me on a low dose, and i cant beleive the difference its made. I have have lost weight since i have been taking them. The symptoms you are experiencing really need to be checked out at the doctors though. I have been to the hospital today for my first blood test since going on thyroxine and i hope everything is ok.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I have been taking medication for about three weeks now,and although I am positive I will need a larger dose,I DO feel a bit better.I have been dieting like mad and also going to the aeorobics,I havent weighed myself but my waistband feels a tiny bit loose, its definitely a hard slog compared to when my thyroid was okay.Judi wrote:I had a large goitre removed just over 12 months ago, i started taking thyroxine 6 months ago as i was getting classic signs of underactive thyroid although my results said i was borderline. In my case , apart from a bad diet and not much exercise , other factors such as having had a hysterectomy at a relatively early age (definitely put on weight after that) and medications which may cause me to put weight on , have combined in my weight increasing and being harder to shift. Although I did lose 1 and a 1/2 stone on the Atkins diet last year , put it all back on though  So I think you can't always just blame your thyroid problems for being overweight , although i'm not saying that it isn't your thyroid in your case , obviously we're all different and only your Doctor can tell you what's causing your weight gain or inability to lose excess weight.
It is frustrating , but there are dangers to taking an increased dose of thyroxine so personally i've come to accept that my Doctor is not going to increase my dosage and if I want to lose weight i'm going to have to do something about my diet and get my butt off the sofa and get on the treadmill that's being used as an expensive clothes horse at the moment

I agree with the weight issue,I used to be stick thin and could eat for england and not gain weightSheel wrote:In my case , apart from a bad diet and not much exercise , other factors such as having had a hysterectomy at a relatively early age (definitely put on weight after that) and medications which may cause me to put weight on , have combined in my weight increasing and being harder to shift. since taking thyroxine I have put weight on but can't seem to shift it(I'm about 1 1/2 stones overweight.).................but it's my lack of exercise that is the problem and although I eat quite healthily really ,I still eat the same amount as I did when I would exercise quite a bit.
same going in +not as much being used up
.......=.........weight gain:eek:
not rocket science really.................the thyroid thing is just a side issue for me.0 -
I suppose it is an excuse and maybe I will try eating less and exercising moretravelover0

I had a blood test done on Friday to check my thyroid.
I have put on tons of weight in the last yr(nearly 3 stone) and feel dreadful.
My hands and feet swell up and my stomach is like a balloon.
I've also been very tired and have started to fall asleep during the day.
I had my thyroid checked a few yrs ago and the doc said it was borderline so I will see what the results are on friday.

I've been on thyroxine for about 7 years and have never been told not to take it with tea or coffee. Where do people get this information from? I read recently that you shouldnt eat until about half an hour after taking it.
As for hyperthyroidism leading to autism, I dont put much store by this. Autism is now recognised as being a genetic disorder. I have a daughter with Aspergers and there are plenty of aspie peeps on both mine and husband's families.

I've never heard of the tea/coffee thing. Just reading the leaflet in my pack of Thyroxine and it says "It is recommended that the tablets are taken before meals , once a day. Swallowed with a glass of water".
Oops! i've just taken mine after my lunch . I just take mine whenever I remember though , which can be at any time of the day.
There's some info here on when to take it and what foods interfere with itSame old same old since 20080
