I would desperately like a higher dose but never get one.
I find it so hard to lose weight now which i never had a problem with all my life.
I too have always had to be careful and watch my diet it is so much harder now also all my weight is around my middle which is a classic symptom.
You would imagine when your dose is correct that the weight would come off but it doesn`t seem to be the case

I was diagnosed with with an under active thyroid many years ago after my immune system seemed to have broken down. I was in a pretty sorry state as it had gone on for some time undiagnosed, but within a few weeks of starting to take thyroxine I gradually began to feel & look better & within a few months had lost the weight I'd gained & the puffiness you get with it. My dose hasn't changed much over the years & currently is 150mgs, which incidentally I always take at night before going to bed, along with my other medications.

I've never heard about nor read any warnings to do with any foods or beverages to avoid. Generally once your optium dose has been found, you take your tablets daily, which are just replacing the hormone your body either doesn't produce, or doesn't produce enough of, & you should be as good as new. Then you try to ensure you have a blood test every year. The gp may decide do this more often if you are feeling unwell at any point as this is usually the first thing they will check out.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I had my fist blood test last week three months after starting on thyroxine, when I rang today for the results the receptioist said everything is fine now,I was a bit taken aback,I am only on 50 mcg a day and assumed I would need more,my symptoms have improved a little.I had taken my dose about an hour before my blood test and wonder if this could affect the reading at all?

Im 24 (soon 25) and have an underactive thyroid and have been on thyroxine since a baby (apparently I used to sleep all the time when i was a kid, which is how they come about testing me), so although ive always been taking thyroxine - still having regular blood tests, I still suffer from the side affects (im always cold, still tired, hard to lose weight, depression & suicidal thoughts unfortunately). Grrrrrrr.

So you think I would be used to it.

Apparently sugar, alcohol & caffeine depresses the thyroid gland - I think I read it in Gillian McKeiths "You are what you eat" - I suppose it must be true, has anyone else heard this? Not sure if I could give up alcohol, caffeine AND sugar :0( But if it did have a dramatic difference I would do. Ideally if i could find a nutritionist that specialises in thyroid problems I would pay for them to tell me exactly what foods I can and cant eat & which supplements to take/not to take - it would definately be worth it.

I am trying to lose weight for my holiday, and unfortunately the only way for me to do it is to go to the gym for about 5 hours a week and follow WW. It doesnt work with just the diet unfortunately :0(

If anyone does have anymore information I would love to hear from you.

Another poster mentioned that you shouldnt take your pills with tea/coffee. Does this mean just to take them, or as in you shouldnt have tea/coffee at all?

I can deal with most of the side effects, but obviously the depression side of things isnt very nice :0(

I just thought that I would let you know that I have it - it seems that there are a lot of us around :0)

    Take care,

I didnt realise the depression was linked to it. I have cut down on my tea drinking over the past fortnight but I am still really tired zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I now have only one or two mugs per day. I take 2 sugars in my tea so that means I have cut down on sugar as well. I dont drink coffee and dont drink much alcohol so what's left??? I am not actually overweight but I do have all the other symptoms :(((

I went to see my doc for the results of my first blood test and he has raised my dose from 50 mcg to 75 mcg aday for a month then I have to start on 100 mcg after that,at least hopefully I will reach a level sooner rather than later.Incidentally he said it takes a fortnight to kick in properly.I still drink a couple of coffees per day I read on an internet site that broccolli, cauliflower and sprouts interfere with thyroid function.I will try to find the article and post it here.
