never been bitten when wearing this - suitable for small children as well, also protects you from midges - marvellous stuff - been in Corfu with swarms and not a single bite
    Titch :)
  • Thanks everyone! I have had some great replies.... I shall pass all of these on to my Mum, and I shall use some of them for myself when I go away. I also ten to get bit but thankfully I don't get an allergic reaction to them!!!

Light coloured long sleeves and trousers to go out in at dusk/dawn is one that has been missed out...I'm planning on garlic capsules backed up with skin so soft for Canada this year.

I'm going to get some mozi wrist bands too, as a back up. I won't be using DEET - I've read too many scare stories about how strong it is.

Hope she has a lovely holiday- perhaps you could buy her a plug-in room mozi repellant before she goes? Widely available in the travel section of Tesco etc. It plugs into the wall and you put a little tablet on it which gets heated and gives off an aroma.

I used Skin So Soft in Costa Rica and got savaged by mossies, I wouldn't bother with it again. If you are just trying to avoid a few irritating bites then try the 'natural' repellents. If you are in an area with malaria or dengue fever, or you have really bad reactions to the bites, then it's not worth the risk.

Cover up and keep away from the worst areas at dusk. Use a Pyrethrin based spray on a couple of sets of clothes, and DEET on exposed skin. I buy 100% DEET and dilute it down in a little spray container, I use 25% most of the time, 50% when I need to and 100% on clothes if I don't have Pyrethrin available. I wouldn't use 100% DEET on bare skin.

Yes DEET is a harsh and nasty chemical, but if the alternative is potentially death (through disease or serious allergic reaction) then it's no contest for me.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I think really that if you are going to places where mosquitos are in abundance then you need to give due consideration to having the appropriate immunisation jabs. If you get Malaria or Yellow Fever, it can be fatal, I understand.

This keeps coming up every couple of months or so this is a study by Florida State Uni Mozzies
I also went to an open day at Rothampsted reserch establishment where they had a test to see if you attracted them I did but some didn't. Anyway they are developing a scent for the future but the expert said that Deet was the only cure at the moment.

Deet every time - I usually use 40% for anywhere with serious mozzies and 50% for definitely serious places. 100% only for soaking your clothes/mozzie net.

Citronella/lemon grass - one of the reasons it's so common in Asian cooking in just this - it repels the beasts when secreted as sweat later.

Prevention is always better though. As soon as it even thinks about turning to dusk - long trousers over socks/tights, long sleeves, scarves and deet on all uncovered bits.

For the night, buy a mozzie net. They are incredibly light, very durable and can be tied to just about anything. Pre-soak in deet is a good move too.
