I just paid £5.65 for first class delivery and it arrived as a second class letter for £1.10. I even had a seller (a different one) admit to postage gouging. I am tempted to try and educate her before she gets banned.

yes this is very different to what I say is ok.

In your case you got misold the delivery service and that is plain wrong. I had same issue with a amazon seller.

PayPal, who are owned by eBay charge a 10% transaction fee, which includes the postage charged so they do profit from postage fees as well.

but not as much as sales fees.

I have emailed ebay uk asking why only the uk site in the entire ebay portfolio excludes handling fees as acceptable charges. I also asked them why they suspend sellers for low ratings given that the rating system is unfit for purpose, attached to my email is various parts of consumer law which ebay breach.

For everyone who is monaning on this thread about perceived excessive postage charges by eBay sellers, do you challenge other online retailers?

No, but I don't rate their postage either.

Consumer law forbids a classified service from dictating sale prices. (this includes delivery fees). ebay cannot legally enforce delivery fees.

What's to stop you putting a note on the listing that the P&P includes a handling fee?

A valid point and the question comes down to where does the balance lie.

Where postage is extremely subjective using the stars to suspend sellers is very unfair on those rated over 12 months, knowing this and marking down for a bit on top is merely cutting your nose to spite your face.

eBay is very BIN originated these days and having a lower P&P charge means a higher BIN price so this all comes down to a backdoor fee hike costing the shoppers (not sellers) for something that eBay have cleverly got them to ask for.

Eh? eBay isn't telling you what delivery fee to charge.

If ebay either dont respond to me, or brush of the non compliance of law, I will take it further. I have done this against other companies before who have backed down.

Eh? eBay isn't telling you what delivery fee to charge.

They have a upper limit according to the page I posted and on top of that sellers can get suspended for high postage fees according to some on this thread. Not only that it clearly states in their t&c they expect postage fees to be non profitable.
