PS. You do realise that it is possible not to display the postage charges when you send through Royal Mail don't you?
I use RMT, so there is not a hope in hell's chance of you even guessing my postage rate.
With PPI, you could 'hazzard' a guess but that would be based on averages, so wouldn't be accurate.
As it's only 1k packets a year for PPI now, I would suggest there are more labels without prices than you imagine.0 -
I realise that no one is prepared to answer my question about whether all this film flam about postage has a potential effect on stars or not, but something else has occurred to me.
When the new TRS requirements come in there will be potentially a issue for small sellers, including myself, that do not go free postage. It will mean the default eBay search will show all the sellers with free postage higher in best match, followed by those sellers charging separate postage but with good stars, with the sellers charging postage but with low stars right at the end.
That will mean the impact of stars on our ability to attract buyers will become more and more important and perhaps even making the difference between a sale and an unsold item. That in turn means that if buyers start to think that inclusive postage is 'the norm' that they will automatically drop a star for those sellers still charging to separately , which leaves us with a Catch 22 situation. Our stars get worse and worse, we drop further down the ranking and we get less buyers with more chance a poor star.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I never said that you should complain up front. I suggested that, as the postage and packing costs are such an important issue to you, that you send the seller a simple question to confirm that the packaging will be to your satisfaction and if they would be prepared to refund you the difference if the postage sticker is cheaper BEFORE you enter into a binding contract based on your assumptions which themselves are based on no evidence whatsoever!
This way both parties will benefit. You will be sure that you will be getting the postage you believe is appropriate and have docuented evidence in your favour in the event if the postage not being as described, and the seller has the opportunity to see the kind of buyer you are and sell to a different bidder using his clearly stated charges without fuss or the risk to his seller ratings.
PS. You do realise that it is possible not to display the postage charges when you send through Royal Mail don't you? I never used to bother doing that as often I paid more than I charged, but I think I'll start now just in case!
It is a binding contract which includes the specified amount for P&P as stated under that designation. If they do not adhere to that it is not I who have broken the contract.
Why would I ask upfront? I just expect that good sellers will be fair as I am and charge at cost. If they don't...they take the consequences of Ebay's system.0 -

THEY ARE ADHERING TO THE CONTRACT! Why do you seen unable to comprehend this. They are charging you EXACTLY what they stated they would charge you and you entered into that contract willingly and of your own volition and recieved the item as promised.
The common statement I have seen everywhere on ebay since I registered in 2001 is:
"Buyers, please ask the seller ALL questions BEFORE bidding".
From your posts, you appear to have had numerous occasions where the postage standard was not as you expected so you must know how much similar items could be posted for, however you continue bidding on and buying items with "inflated" P&P charges in the hope they will arrive packaged differently this time.
Unless the sellers you are buying from have awful TSR's then clearly the charges are acceptable for the HUGE majority of all his other buyers, making you the EXCEPTION.
Therefore if you demand exceptional service, what harm does it to to make the seller aware of this in order to avoid disappointment? Or are you are the kind of person who prefers to be disappointed and then go to all the trouble of complaining and returning or threatening to trash someones rating rather than spend 10 seconds sending the seller a quick message before bidding? It makes no sense to me at all.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.0 -
How can they be adhering to a contract if they state P&P will be x and it is not x? They are entering a charge under a specific designation, not under a designation which says P&P and sundries.
I am by no means an exception which is why lots of sellers have low stars for p&p.0 -

Postage is getting the item from my door to yours. How do you know they didn't pay someone to drop the item from their address to the post office? All you know is the number you read off the postage sticker which is never the whole story! ALso the second "P" stands for PACKING This has been stated dosens of times in this thread.I am by no means an exception which is why lots of sellers have low stars for p&p.
So are you telling me now that you knowingly buy from sellers with low P&P ratings when you are so particular about P&P?

No, I am saying that lots of buyers receive goods and then rate the seller by giving a low star for P&P if it is not what they have been charged.
That is what the system is there for, why else would there be a rating system for all the component parts of a sale?
Those who consistently overcharge or even those small sellers who overcharge and fall foul of one or two buyers who think this way, will have their accounts restricted.0 -

What about asking stars for the item price? eBay are only interested in the postage because it's the component they don't raise revenue from.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. That maybe true, but the asking price is a decision you make upfront, you are either prepared to pay that price for that product or you are not. It is not a finite quantity and it is subjective. Postage is quantifiable and measurable against the actual.
Additionally, if the item is not of the quality you expect, or is in someway not as described then you can rate the seller accordingly.0
