And what would be wrong with that, I ask myself? It's getting warm enough for camping and I bet your DD would LOVE it. Cheaper than a hotel too.Val.0 -

I'm on notanewuser's side with the accommodation - I don't do camping, I wouldn't get enough sleep in a tent overnight which would make me a grumpy cowbag for the whole weekend . Also, when I go up to my family's for a visit I do stay in my brother's flat - but he's usually not there. I've done the sleeping on sister's floor on an airbed, on the sofa at my mum's etc - its far more relaxing and less restrictive for everyone if we have our own space to retire to. Plus my DD doesn't like sleeping at Granny's because Granny snores like a loud freight train every night (she really does).0 -

It's a shame they didn't know parents in law were going away if only to use their house. This is something my in laws do a lot and it works well for them all.0 -

We had a similar situation with mil she lives 3 hrs away and her visits are rare, she asked if she and bil could come over last weekend staying at a hotel.
Great we said, the kids were really excited to see her and as it is dds birthday this weekend would be lovely.
It was lovely weather so when she arrived friday eve, she only stayed for half an hour as she was tired from the drive and we asked her if she would like a trip to the local park with the kids the next day.
She then told us thst her and bil were going to the match on sat and she wouldn't be over til half four!
She got to us at five had one cup of tea and left, the kids were really upset as was I yet dh seemed to take it in his stride, I was fuming and had it been my mother I would have definitely said something.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

I have never actually been 'camping' and under some circumstances I would give it a go.....circumstances like having a proper bathroom in the house to use. BUT. Not if I and a small kid had just had a chest infection. Have to say, it's also something I'd be more likely to do with friends houses rather than family I think.0

Looks like I got everyone's camping genes instead, then, and I'm very happy about this. There's no finer type of holiday when you have kids, they can run around outside the tent and play with all the other kids while you relax under the front canopy with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. I'd much rather that than be locked up in a hotel room with my family, especially when they were small. Gimmie my big tent any day!
(I must point out my big trailer tent has double beds with proper mattresses, electricity, en suite loo, fitted kitchen and a living space bigger than most folk's lounges. We've got a shelf full of smaller tents right down to the type you carry up mountains in January but for family camping you can't beat a bit of comfort. And yes we have taken it and pitched it in friends' gardens when we've been visiting, if the garden has been accessible with enough grass to put it on. We usually end up with all our host's kids camping out in it as well, lol.)Val.0 -

But it still misses the point that OP and her kid haven't been brilliantly well in recent weeks0
