it isn't the vet's fault that the dog was hurt - it was the OP's fault that he/she couldn't provide it with pain relief by not bothering to get pet insurance for the likelihood of something happening to this poor animal

No, but it is a sensible thing to do. Most pets at some point in their lives need veterinary attention. We have already had to claim almost 2 grand for our cat. Dread to think what would have happened if we had not had insurance.0 -
I would imagine that the majority of pet owners do not have insurance.With both my dogs,i decided to take the risk,as thankfully we would have the money to pay for emergency care.Both dogs needed a lot more vet care as they got older but working it out on what i would have paid in,i was still better off.
I could understand the slagging off if the OP had not taken the dog to a vets at all ,as unbelievably,some people don't, and just let them suffer.But everything possible was done as quickly as possible.I bet that even if there was insurance he would have wanted to have it confirmed in writing,in triplicate,and over the phone too,whilst the dog was crying in pain.Some vet!!You do right to complain.
The vet who treated my first beloved dog carried on treating her even when it was obvious that she was past saving,and looking back i wish i had not been so emotional about it that i let him.It is only afterwards you realise these things.Shortly after that,i asked him to treat,or put down a sick collared dove i found in my garden one sunday morning.He called it vermin,and refused.That sickened me.
I obviously changed from then on and trust my new vet now.0 -

My vet has NEVER asked to have confirmation in writing of my pet insurance - it does not make you a bad owner to not have pet insurance but I do think it makes for less anguish when anything goes wrong though (for pet and owner).0 -
I am self employed so dont have a regular income. I try to commit to few monthly outgoings for this reason.
If you are well off enough to insure yourself against every eventuality in your life then well done, I for one certainly canot afford to do that.
The issue here really is that the vet was more interested in getting paid UP-FRONT for the treatment he had not yet done and ignored the 7 month old dog shaking with pain and clearly in shock and then allowed us to leave without even considering the welfare of the animal. He knew we had sufficient funds on us to pay for some basic pain relief, that was not even offered! If anyone reading this thinks that is an acceptable thing to do then I am glad you are not a freind of mine.
It has been proven to me that this vet is not typical of the majority of vets by the fact that Summerhill Avenue Vets Newport were there for us to help us when we needed help and took Daisy in and gave her the treatment she needed and showed concern and compassion not only for the animal but for us too. All this without even asking for a penny up front.
That is how a vet should be, there are no excuses or reasons for the way we were treated by The Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service (who are a completely different company to Valley Vets but they operate from the same premises)

I hope Daisy is on the mend - knowing the breed she will soon be bouncing about in no time!
Its also worth pointing out to some of you that even if you have pet insurance some vets will make you pay the bill and then reclaim it from your insurance company. Others will do the claim direct for you, only if they have affiliations with that insurer.
As Smartsuit had pointed out, this vet was only interested in being paid in full and upfront. The majority of vets I have found, when I have had to call them out have never even charged me for that days fees, it has all come in a bill at the end, and if for whatever reason the bill is not managable they have always been happy to come to an arrangement.
I would make a formal complaint to the practice manager and point out that there is media interest in the case and see how quickly they reply!

Smartsuit - you are absolutely right - no animal should be dealt with the way that Daisy was and I am glad she is on the mend. What I was pointing out is that with the exhorbitant fees being asked for these days by a lot of vets it may well be worth considering insurance for peace of mind. I know we have never regretted taking it out, not least because our cat has an ongoing condition which needs regular treatment and would have cost us thousands by the end of his life.0
