Most probably the real intention anyway.
Work can be a bad word for some families.0 -
Im not working at the moment but just have a question for hopefully when I do. I know people can't smoke in their workplace but often have fag breaks and smoke in their lunch hour. I can't stand the smell of smoke and it also gives me a banging headache so wouldnt be able to work with people like that. There is no way I could be forced to is there?
Yes.

People who come up with rubbish reasons like this give job seekers a bad name! I hope they go into the job centre and explain their problem... I'm fairly sure their adviser will laugh them out of the buildingThere is a really bad smell in here - best get out some Gucci and give it a good squirt

Damn, I only have Beyonce Heat... will that do? :rotfl:0 -

Very good point! It's a miracle that the OP hasn't encountered any smoking jobseeker advisors isn't it. Imagine if they had to sign on with someone who had smoked, got the instant headache and had to leave without being able to get their JSA! Good job there are never any smokers in the job centre, eh! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

Hmmm.
When I was younger, I had a job that involved visiting lots of different client sites.
It wasn't just vegetarians in the office who were known to gag at the stench of meat processing factories and slaughterhouses.
Oh, and it was before the smoking ban, so if a client smoked on his own site, we just had to suck it up (or in). And, yes, finish the day with a banging headache.
Seriously, you need to get a grip.import this0 -

At my JCP there's always a group of smokers stood outside whenever I've been to sign on - how the hell would she get in the building if she was signing there? _pale_:think:
Must admit - I do enjoy a ciggie before I have to enter that godforsaken place and put on a performance

No, there is no way you can be forced to. No-one is going to turn up at your doorstep each morning and drag you kicking and screaming to a workplace you don't want to go to.
However, like much in life, it is up to each of us to weigh up the advantages of doing something against the disadvantages of not doing it.
So.... You don't take a job with nasty filthy smelly smokers =
Upside - you're not exposed to the smell of smoke, don't get a banging headache, and don't have to "work with people like that".
Downside - no salary, possible loss of entitlement to JSA and other benefits, lack of experience on CV, longer gap in work history making it harder to find other employment.
One person may decide it's worth it, another may not. It's entirely your choice.0 -
My problem with working with smokers is more down to the fact their cigarette breaks add up over the day and suddenly they've had a half hour more break-time than those who don't smoke. If music be the food of love, play on :beer:0

Take up smoking if it troubles you that much.Achtung_Baby wrote: »My problem with working with smokers is more down to the fact their cigarette breaks add up over the day and suddenly they've had a half hour more break-time than those who don't smoke.0
