Working with smokers

If they get their work done, who cares? I get in 15 mins early and never take my 1 hour unpaid lunchbreak. I take in my lunch and eat while I'm working. I may take 4 or 5 cig breaks a day, each of between 3 and 6 minutes depending on how busy I am. So, overall, I don't even use up my unpaid 60 minute lunchbreak with my smaller ciggie breaks.

Totally agree. If they have a set amount of work to complete and they do it, why does it matter how many breaks they have?

You could be in an office where the other team members take up the slack when the smoker is not there and you get paid to work a certain amount of hours not paid for smoking. That's like saying 'I am up to date, so I will go on the internet for an hour'

Im not working at the moment but just have a question for hopefully when I do. I know people can't smoke in their workplace but often have fag breaks and smoke in their lunch hour. I can't stand the smell of smoke and it also gives me a banging headache so wouldnt be able to work with people like that. There is no way I could be forced to is there?

Why are you worried about it now anyway? This is an issue to be dealt with once you get a job AND you happened to be sitting next to someone who smokes. It sounds like you are not there yet, so your attention should be to get a job to start with.

That thread made me laugh though because I have a colleague who only smokes at work, but her husband doesn't know. It's been going on for years now, and clearly he hasn't smelt it on her once!!

Of course don't forget that someone could have an issue with you if you have an annoying loud voice (that definitely is headache material!), or you wear a horrid strong perfume, or put too much hairspray in your hair, or you have a bracelet that makes very annoying sounds, or you keep fidgeting on your chair, or maybe you talk to yourself, or or or....

So many things that can be annoying, but I don't know anyone who are worried about being forced to take a job where they might be confronted with any of the above...

Of course because it's such fun being in the house 24/7! You have no idea of my circumstances so don't judge me.

So work from home if you have such a low tolerance for working around people. I've worked from home for the last six years - PAYE and benefits. Although the company has changed -the job is talked about on the Up Your Income thread. My company has been recruiting recently and I know at least two people who are starting with them I believe about forty were recruited this time around.

I presume you are one of those people who go and sit by smokers outside and then try and cause a scene. I think tolerance for such drama lama antics is pretty much despised by most grown ups nowdays though.

Perhaps you'd have more luck job hunting if you actually left the house though ?

In jobs I've worked in before people were always nipping out for a fag, the time they were gone didn't bother me just the smell. I don't see why I should have to put up with it. Smoking is a disgusting vile smelling habit, I think it should be banned everywhere except where the smoker lives. Even if someone smoked 1 cigarette during the day their clothes would still smell of it and I would end up with a banging headache and therefor I would have to go home.

To the person who assumed I'm avoiding work this is not the case thank you very much.

so what about people who got BO, or don't wash their clothes regular, got smelly feet, bad breath, stale perume/aftershave, fart, food smells, smell of their pets dogs, cat wee, horses etc..

    would you complain about them????

I think you need to get off your high and mighty horse, If it wasn't the smell of smoking it would be some other smell...

Who the heck do you think you are??

If you cant stand certain people due to something they do, and cant work with them, then go self employed and work by yourself...

In my last job we didn't get paid to work a certain amount of hours, we got paid to get a job done. There were times of the year when that meant working longer than 'normal working hours' and times of the year where it meant working fewer than 'normal working hours'. It evened out over the year and my boss trusted us as adults to manage our own workload and ensure the work got done. She had no problem with people going to get a coffee from the cafe over the road, nipping to the post office while it was quiet, nipping out for a fag etc.

Well there is no law about smoking or doing anything else in your own time.

I can not see how one cigarette at lunch time would smell so badly?

Lots of companies do not allow smoking breaks so they should not be smelling of fags etc

Oh 1 cigarette is all it takes. when my sister comes to mine and goes out into the garden for a cig, I can smell it as soon as she comes back in.......my mum used to smoke in the house, she once sent some pureed food to my house when my baby was being weaned, the cling flim and tub stank of smoke! Disgusting. Needless to say, I never take food from her now and she doesn't smoke in the house.
