Working with smokers

So do fumes from cars, vans and lorries. It is about time they did ban smoking outside it stinks, it gets on your clothes, in your hair and in your mouth.
Yes it's people's choice to smoke but not to make everyone else suffer because of their filthy habit.
I also wouldn't move if someone sat next to me smoking why should I so what I do is spray a cheap body spray in their direction.
If you spray something at someone and it hits them then that's an assult surely. It may as well be mace! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I am trying not to laugh, as I will wake up the whole house who are sound asleep! You cannot work in an office where people work and may smoke, oh my oh my! whatever next.
No you cannot tell a company you will not sit in an office where people sit who smoke, they do not smoke in the office that is not allowed, what they do on there way to work or on their breaks is up to them.
I cannot abide the smell of garlic, but several people in my office stink of it on a daily basis, but that is par for the course in an office, if you think that you can dictate what people do outside the office I am sorry you are mistaken. And sorry no, it should not be that smokers can only smoke in their own homes, and as for spraying someone with cheap perfume, if it hits them in the eye you could end up in serious trouble, it would be classed as assault as you have done it on purpose.
If the smell of just one cigarette on a person gives you a banging headache, like others here I suggest you go and see your GP as you have some type of problem.
I wonder just how many jobs you will find with an attitude like the one you have, you are putting up barriers before even getting out the house to get a job! Some Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stones,Sometimes the hard times won't leave meBSC 162:beer:Banktupt 22 Oct 2008 at 10am!0 -
Im not working at the moment but just have a question for hopefully when I do. I know people can't smoke in their workplace but often have fag breaks and smoke in their lunch hour. I can't stand the smell of smoke and it also gives me a banging headache so wouldnt be able to work with people like that. There is no way I could be forced to is there?
Oh dear, you don't sound happy at all. To be fair I cannot stand the smell of smoke either and smokers do not realise they smell of it, because they cannot smell it. It is as simple as that.
As far as work is concerned. An employer is under no obligation to have a designated area where you can smoke, but its good practice to do so. In fact, quite a few insurance companies make it an exception on the policy that smoking not allowed on the site. If there is no insurance requirement (there usually is, but it needs pointing out to the boss), then providing the employer provides a safe location in a building with less than four sides and free ventilation, thy can smoke.
When I see clients and speak to the workforce many non smokers don't like it. Mainly because they see the smokers nipping off for a fag! Yet the employee can say they have an addition and need to smoke. In that instance, te employer has to make reasonable adjustments.
It's an imperfect world!0 -
Why don't you just stop whinging about what might happen, get a job then worry about what "undesirables" you might have to encounter once you're there?DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

In jobs I've worked in before people were always nipping out for a fag, the time they were gone didn't bother me just the smell. I don't see why I should have to put up with it. Smoking is a disgusting vile smelling habit, I think it should be banned everywhere except where the smoker lives. Even if someone smoked 1 cigarette during the day their clothes would still smell of it and I would end up with a banging headache and therefor I would have to go home.
To the person who assumed I'm avoiding work this is not the case thank you very much.
I think the same about coffee......vile, horrible stuff that stinks the place out and makes me sick (not just feel sick but actually vomit).
Edited to add - I would not however refuse to work because someone was drinking coffee in the office. I have worked in many offices and with many people drinking coffee (oh and smoking cigars which is another one that makes me feel sick, pre smoking ban) and have just got on with it. Sometimes just asking the person if they could move their cup away from me slightly has been enough to stop me feeling so eurgh..at other times, I would find an excuse to do some filing, printing or something which involved me being away from my desk for a few minutes whilst still working. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

OP why don't you get a job working on your own then you wouldn't have to smell it.0

Depending on the type of job and workplace, you may find smokers are actually more productive. No, really. Software development doesn't only happen in front of a computer, for instance - in fact getting up and away for 10 minutes every hour to discuss concepts with colleagues, look at problems obliquely, allow solutions to formulate in a relaxed mind, etc.
Clearly there are many, many excellent reasons not to smoke, but it's not always a simple case of having a fag equalling slacking off.0 -
Personally, I think the OP needs to get a grip (or possibly even a life) because, sure as eggs are eggs, they won't be getting a job0
