Working with smokers

They don't, that was outlawed a long time ago. Much as outdated as this idea that smokers are entitled to some sort of additional PAID smoking break.I never said people are not entitled to a paid break I said you can not be paid for a smoking break
Most places do not have tea break only lunch breaks and smokers are not going to go all the way to say 1pm or 2pm to have a fag if the last one they got was 8.50am!
Since when do people smoke at their desks anyway???
It never happened in my workplace, a smoker would have no choice but to use the official breaks to have a smoke, whether or not they have to sweat it out til lunchtime. (however they tended to use the official 10 minute, 10.30am pre lunch tea break and the 3pm official tea break to do so). Were it a case of having no breaks till lunchtime, they would just have to sweat it out, much like the old guy who liked to have a pint after work before he got home.
I much prefer that the workplace has a no smoking policy, it makes for a fresher office, I have no objections whatsoever, to a smoker using their breaks (Paid or unpaid) to leave the premises and have their cigarette, it means I can get on with my job without having to endure the smog of a smokers cigarette.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

In jobs I've worked in before people were always nipping out for a fag, the time they were gone didn't bother me just the smell. I don't see why I should have to put up with it. Smoking is a disgusting vile smelling habit, I think it should be banned everywhere except where the smoker lives. Even if someone smoked 1 cigarette during the day their clothes would still smell of it and I would end up with a banging headache and therefor I would have to go home.
To the person who assumed I'm avoiding work this is not the case thank you very much.
I'm sure you have habits other people do not like, but we do have to put up with the foibles of others. So is life.0 -

But it's not a valid reason to refuse to take a job, so, if you were on JSA and cited this as a reason, and refused to take a job you would be sanctioned.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

At our workplace you are not allowed to smoke on the premises full stop. But we have a colleague who comes back from lunch break smelling of smoke but I actually find it less offensive than my colleague who tends to smell if wee and she's not even very old she's not even 50 yet :rotfl: prefer the smells of smoke to be honest!0

Good point. I can recall three non smokers at work, the receptionist who wore some cheap perfume that made me sneeze whenever I had to see her, the old guy who had the misfortune of wearing a colostomy bag, who would make everyone heave as he passed by and of course the guy who had a serious B.O. problem, to the point people would leave deodorants on his desk as a hint.I'm sure you have habits other people do not like, but we do have to put up with the foibles of others. So is life.
They each reeked as bad as any smoker, but as it was not against any policy to have any sort of whiff, we were not entitled to complain nor get out of work as a result of it.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Annoyingly, where I work it is up to the team managers to manage smoking 'breaks' so there are great inequities. One team doesn't allow any smoking breaks at all but has a 15min tea-break + 30min lunch + 15min tea-break day (so you smoke during official breaks); another team doesn't have any official tea-breaks and a 60min lunch, but does permit team members to 'nip out for 5 minutes' occasionally for a cig.
Being a non-smoker, it does annoy me that I work up to 30 minutes longer each day than some smoking colleagues whose '5 minute smoke' invariably turns into at least 10 minutes a couple of times a day. So I tend not to feel guilty if I have a long chat with someone by the watercooler, or stop working for a 'chocolate break'

I'm sorry OP, but you are coming accross as far too precious. If it affects you as much as you say, then it may well be a psychological or physical problem that you yourself have to address.
I do not like the smell of perfume, BO, garlic and a myriad of other things, but that is part and parcel of being a member of the human race.

I'm far from precious! But I don't see why I have to put up with it and I certainly wont. If someone sits next to me when im out somewhere smoking i'll make a comment to them. I get banging headaches when I'm around that smell it's not psychological at all it's disgusting. There's plenty of other smells I don't like but they don't give me headaches or make me feel ill!!0
