daft question, but here goes... those who ordered with very catologue, will buying one from there ruin my credit history? I don't fully understand what credit history is, but my dad talks about it a lot, and I think I need to have a good one to get a mortgage (won't be affording one for about 5 years, but got to look to the future!). If anyone could help I would appreciate it!

From one non-techic to another -
Unpack the nook > charge it up > turn your computer on > turn the nook on >
Then if you are like me you'll discover that although you are using a wired connection for your 'puter, the wifi bit is also turned on and the nook will do all the connecting and transferring for you.
You'll need the code that came with your router and the info for the nook account you set up on your pc.
It will do everything else - passing serial numbers, registering etc
If you've bought any books they will start downloading themselves.
I didn't have a clue what was happening cos I though the my wifi was turned off but obviously not.
Now, I search online with the computer, 'buy' what I want (it's all been free books so far from B&N) they send me an email to confirm the sale and the next time I have both the computer and the nook turned on, they download automatically to the nook.
They don't go on my computer and I don't have to transfer them.
So my answers are -
a) No, can't be. I set this computer up and didn't realise I'd done it.
b) Yes, apparently I've been working like that for at least 6 months.
c) No, let the nook do it itself, it's working fine for me.
Thanks a lot for the very helpful reply. I still haven't even unpacked it yet as it is a present for OH, but I am trying to find out how to set it up before I give it to him.
There is a wireless code thing in the front of the booklet that came with the router, so hopefully it will be fairly straightforward.
Woman I work with has the same router and is also with Orange and said she had problems setting up wifi, had to contact their technical department and she is far more techie aware than I am:(
I am just hoping that I can switch the Nook on and then connect to wifi without even having to switch my desktop PC on - do you think this sounds at all likely? As you can probably tell, I am completely paranoid when it comes to the internet:eek:
Also, forgot to ask, does the Nook Simple Touch come with a charger?Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
It can only HELP your credit history if you pay it off, and don't get into arrears.
E.g. Me who has been unemployed for 6 years and has no income, has a good credit score. My wife who has never been unemployed has a poor credit history, why because she has NEVER applied for credit/loan/etc.Registered Linux user #497422 :beer:0 -

No charger just a usb cable. Buy a mains/usb adapter from ebay 1A (5W) versions are fine. (10W are better)
As to connecting to your wifi I am afraid it is a case of suck it and see. I would charge the nook, then it can be tested on the wifi and the charge will last for months if not used. Since you have your password it should work, just make sure it is YOUR wifi it is seeing before you enter the password, here I can see 7 other wifi networks :rotfl:Registered Linux user #497422 :beer:0 -

If you follow the link on Apprentice Alf's Blog i.e:
The latest tools_v6.05.zip can be downloaded from
http://www1.datafilehost.com/d/e290f19f
Then make sure you un-tick the box that says
"Use our download manager and get recommended downloads"
Then click on the smaller grey 'Download' box (not the large black 'Download Now' box) and you will get the tools with no virus warnings (it's the download manager that this host site is trying to include with the tools that generates the virus warning).
Hope that ok.
Thanks. That is the same link and method I tried before. I attempted it again with Firefox (again) and the large black download box on the right was missing anyway. I unticked the "Use our download manager and get recommended downloads" box then clicked on the 'download' button on the left but EVERY TIME it started, the tick re-appeared in the box I had just unticked, so I cancelled the procedure.
I then tried it with Chrome and the large download button on the right was there. I unticked the download manager box and clicked the left download button and got the 'malicious' warning message still.
I went ahead with the download, checked it was a zip file, scanned it etc and installed it.
Looked at the readme but followed the step-by-step instructions from apprenticealf guide, and FINGERS CROSSED it seems to be okay.
Many thanks for your help (for some reason my thanks button is not registering when I click it?)0
