to try and answer a few questions ......
As far as I can see you do not have to register your nook, it just makes it easier to use and buy books.
If you all ready have books , or have a daughter / friend / relative , who has ebooks then they can be used ( there are some limitations to this)
putting books on the nook is as simple as connecting the nook to your computer via usb (use the cable supplied) a window should pop up, click on the my files , then books folders then drag and drop / cut and paste from where you have them on your computer.
Of course this system depends on you having sourced some books else where !

These nooks are great, have rooted mine and can run email, internet, some games (sudoku anyone?) plus trialling various reader softwares that may (or may not) be better than the stock reader. A great 30 quid spent on a new toy!0

Rooting isn't just about running a web browser, replacement home screens/lauchers etc are also available.
So, 'rooting' means modifying the Nook operating system so you can add other programs?
How do you know which programs would work on the Nook?
Thanks in advance:)'It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.'

Are there any downsides to rooting your Nook? Do you need to be in the know with computers to do it? I have looked at a few instructions and they seem like another language! Thanks0

Basically yes.
I used the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351
We're restricted to apps that run on Android V2.1 and earlier... meaning many won't work. Additionally, the screen refresh rate is such that animation is poor... but there are guides around to replacing the kernel - I haven't got that far, and probably won't bother.
I would recommend it only for people who either know what they are doing, or are happy if they lose functionality!0 -

I read on on someone's blog that rooting invaldates your warranty. Mind you, I think if I had a £29 one, I might take the chance - if I were clever enough to be able to sort it, that is!0 -
Yeah! Just got a dispatch notification from Very, only been on order since the 2nd!
My one from Nook UK got returned this morning as well, told UPS guy to return it.
As to rooting invalidating your warranty, well using the tool, make a backup before you root then if you need to you can restore it to factory fresh (I did this when I messed the repartitioning up)
To restore it, just boot from the root sdcard, at the title page choose restore and wait ... for a while mine took about 20min to restore, this only works if you BACKED it up before you rooted it first.Registered Linux user #497422 :beer:0 -
Followed instructions on post # 514 about the browser, it seemed to be done but nothing happened. Can someone please tell me how to get this browser on. Thanks0
