my "moan", excuse me this is a forum for people to state their problems and for other people to help/advise, not a forum for you to judge people, have a pop at people and think your better than them. If you dont have an issue with tax credits and dont have any useful advice why are you even posting?
  • yes everyone is entitled to their opinion, but your just judging people and on here to be nasty. Of course people are moaning, because as usual the government do a shabby job and we are all left being penalised for it. Its ridiculous that we even have to go through all this, they have the info on their system, but of course they cant do things the simple way, that would make sense, no they just want to try and set people up, looking for ways to stop peoples money. Funny as they are quick enough to recoup money they are owed/entitled to, like overpayments.
  • I never received a renewal form and have been trying to call since early June with my figures in any event. Line has been sh1te since then, and nobody is to blame but HMRC for the problems with the phone.
It is beyond me, how you can do your tax return online but there isn't a basic piece of software that allows you to do this online.
Plus, they know most of our incomes as its on our various P60's etc.
  • Because its an easy way for people to accidentally give the wrong info, I was in and out of work in the tax years they are asking about, I've got P45's left, right and centre, some I now cant find, it is easy for this to get in a muddle and end up giving the wrong amount. If they "check" it and the info is wrong then the claimant gets penalised.

If they can check it, they have access to it, and therefore it is a pointless exercise getting claimants to do all of this jumping through hoops.

And I wouldnt bank on Universal Credit making things simpler, they are already having major issues with it in the area's its been piloted in. Its more hassle than its worth apparently.
  • exactly keithing-ger, I completely agree, its their phone system at the end of the day. They all work for HMRC so why they cannot just use the info that HMRC has is beyond me.
  • There isnt a basic software for this becasue it opens TC up to massive amounts of fraud. So thats the reason why you cant do it online.

As for others blaming HMRC for the wait time, as others have already stated, there is only so much that can be done to help reduce the call times. This includes offering you the chance to fill in the form with your income and sending it back.

Reading the forms and listening to messages on the phone would also help as a massive chunk of the people calling do not even need to call but as they have not listened to/read the info they have been given in the past, they call anyway holding up others who actually need to speak to someone.

I find it incredible that people will go to such lengths as asking for phone calls to be paid for or lodging complaints where there is no one at fault, just for the sake of complaining.

**This isnt a a pop at anyone in particular** :D

They can still change it when you phone them. If you provide an incorrect figure for your income and they have access to your actual income from the employer, they will use the one the employer has issued. As for them using the wrong income, my understanding is when you send the form in, its scanned and not manually entered onto the systems so if they use the wrong figure, the form has been completed wrong

Not strictly true, because my figures were NOT incorrect. And no my form was completed correctly, I retain a copy and have strict records. I asked the advisor on the telephone to confirm the figures on my original form and they are exactly as so - we then used the very same figures as described previously.

In my case we talk about loss rules and clearly the figures on my form will not match what is on the HMRC database.

There is no section for losses on the form, however if you follow the guidance on the working sheets it confirms you must deduct any self employment losses from any income entered onto the form.

So for example £25K salary, £10K loss, you enter £15K salary in the box on the form and NOT £25K.

That is why I say they have made a mistake, even when I sent them proof and a working sheet to help them understand. :D

I understand the rules quite well and have IQ on here to thank for that. Please only post if you know what you are talking about :-)

No-one is forcing you to claim Tax Credits, however if you are choosing to claim thousands of pounds a year (probably), then providing information once a year isn't really asking much.

If you are saying you left it until the last minute as you were waiting on 11-12 income, then I don't understand why it has taken over a year for you to get this info?

If you are looking for advise like you have stated, then the 1st piece of advise I would give is to move to a phone provider that doesn't charge a connection fee to phone an 0345 tel no. Most landlines and mobile providers allow 0345 calls for free.

Hi addy123 ring the number 03000523793... U will get through straight away

Just wanted to say a big thanks to taylorlou.i renewed my tax credits by phone, and was compliance checked, this was completed and found to be fine... however, 11 weeks after I initially renewed they told me the marker had not been removed by the compliance team and I would just have to wait. This morning I rang the number above (which was answered within 3 minutes), and the very nice polite lady removed the marker for me, and said that the renewal is now done and the system will be updated within 24 hours. She said I will recieve my finalised award letter sometime next week!! What a relief, I cant thank you enough for your advice taylorlou xxx :D
