I do not have a safe place and i think it shows the difference between a London dweller and someone who lives elsewhere. I have a fully secured house, no side gates or side wall, an attached garage (the walk through to the rear garden is within the garage. The drive only has a small retaining wall and my council forbid any bins or other junk to be left out. Unless they leave things in full view of passers by (and they do) there is no where at all to leave a parcel safely.

Personally I don't even buy expensive pots for my plants at the front as I don't trust them not to walk as well.

I have a side gate, but I keep it bolted for security. If I had 'behind the gate' as my safe place, they'd have to throw it over the gate, not so good for a fragile item.

Also it'd get wet if it rained, so that wouldn't be good.

I wouldn't like to nominate a neighbour on an official basis. My neighbour is very helpful about taking in parcels for me, but I wouldn't like to impose on him too much.

I do my best to order for delivery on a day when I'm likely to be in, and hope for the best.

Incidentally, I've been saying that I know the time that the Royal Mail postman will arrive - today a postman randomly turned up at 4.30pm with a parcel!

I had a buyer choose to pay £8 for royal mail today, instead of £3.99 for collect plus.

My courier leaves my parcels in my bin - but i'm always nervous near collection days. :D

i'd neg them. they didn't commit to your contract of sale. their substitution of courier has caused you hassle. regardless of whether you got the item or not you paid thinking RM were the delivery option. I'm sure a few ebayers and amazoners are being caught out with RM price increase now - the savvy thing to do would be to 1st contact buyer to explain yr error and ask if a substitute service is ok, or 2nd to bite the bullet and learn a hard lesson - or cancel the transaction at yr cost of possible bad bbk or performance ratings.

Would your Hermes delivery person not leave the item in a safe place? Mine always does.

I am interested in opinions on this because I have just set up an account with them, and was very impressed with their service. I am thinking of switching to them completely rather than use RM. I wouldn't ask for a signature, but if people dislike couriers then it will reduce buyers.

Do people prefer to pay £5.20 rather than £3.00?

I have just had a collect plus parcel delivered and I asked what he would do if I was out, and he said he would leave in a safe place too unless a signature was needed.

I won't buy from anyone who uses a courier and I now email companies to ask what postal service they use before I buy. I have no safe place as I live in a block of flats that is right on a main road (there isn't even a front garden area). If the parcel was left with a neighbour I doubt I would see it again! I had someone who sent via myhermes recently and it was so much hassle as the courier did not live in the area. I live in a rural area and the depots are miles away too. One seller sent via CityLink, but it said RM on the listing. The CityLink depot is MILES away in the next county and not accessible via public transport. Luckily he refunded me and admitted that he lived in a city and hadn't realised that there weren't depots in every area!

of course, these few people who are unable to accomodate deliveries when they're not there could always try going to buy from a shop.

Or they could use sellers that ship via a method they are happy with...except of course this thread is about sellers who change shipping methods after the sale ends and with no notice.

It is a point though, although not what the threads about.

Some people are out all day every day. If they are never home - why get items delivered there? They should just shop the old fashioned way.

They might be like me and live a 5 minute drive from the mail centre and know that they can collect RM parcels on a Saturday , or even after work on a 'early day'. My mail centre is open from 6.30 am- 7.15 pm in the week.

I live in the country and the choice of shopping is very poor. My choice is online shopping or drive 60 miles to the nearest decent shopping area.

so if you're *that* rural just designate somewhere for parcels to be left.
