seller sent an item by my hermes

I purchased an item off ebay which stated on it dispatch by royal mail 2nd class. The seller has sent it my hermes I missed one delivery and will not be in when they come again. They try three times according to the card and it is unlikely I will be here on the third either as I am out most days for the next two weeks.

I would not had bid if it had stated carrier delivery, as I can never guarantee I will be here. Post is easy I just collect it from the sorting office at my leisure. I paid £8 delivery costs I know the prices have gone up with RM but surely this should have more than covered RM charges.

Where do I stand with this?

  • Can you email and ask the seller to post it to your work address instead or you ring the number on the couriers card and offer to collect it from the couriers home instead, as it is always a local every day regular person who drops in their vicinity. Or ask for it to be left in a "safe place" around your garden or specify either next door neighbour or inside your brown wheelie bin?
NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself"
  • I think that the seller meant well, and that they if you ask, can log in in and could (perhaps?) go online and arrange to drop it at a nearby shop for you to nip in and pick up? If your item gets returned the seller after the 3rd aborted attempt as they required a signature, they would refund you but I think they would be allowed to keep the postage aspect.

Suppose, you could argue you didnt want to sign for an item as you are not home in office hours, but there must be a way to intercept your parcel before it is returned to sender.

All that will happen is it gets returned and they resend it again, or you get refunded if unhappy to wait any longer, am sure it could be resolved by contacting them again and adding a second address for delivery where someones available to take it in for you?

Yes, the number written on the card should be right to the individual courier.

If it where me, I'd let it go back to the sender and ask for a refund, dealing with couriers is a right pain in the !!!- you shouldn't have to chase a package when the seller has scrimped on delivery getting it to you.

Can you get the seller to phone the courier and arrange for it to go to an alternative address? (often on the seller can do this, as they have the contract with the courier).

Or is there a safe place the courier can leave it?

I would send a polite email to the seller explaining your dilemma. I also only buy items sent by RM during term time, as I can't be in for a courier, and live too far away to go pick them up from their depots!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I don't think Hermes have depots as such to collect items as it's usually self employed people delivering items.

Since Royal Mail put their prices up,Medium sized parcels can cost 3-4 pounds with Hermes and 6 with Royal Mail so there are more sellers using couriers now.

Doesn't the card have a telephone number on to contact the courier directly as that would be the easiest option.

Or as a last resort, leave a note on your door asking deliveries to be left specifically with a neighbour who will be in,I've done that before.
  • If your local courier has left their phone number give them a call and ask them to leave it on premises if possible. If not make the same request through a call centre.

myHermes have no depots you can collect from, so unless you have a very nice courier who'll let you collect from their house you're a bit stuck really.

No telephone number on the card

I paid plenty of p+p £8 for the new royal mail charges

I could leave a note but am not too happy about leaving notices on my door that advertise I am out!

To be honest I could do without the hassle of dealing with carriers, which is why I was happy to pay a high delivery cost for the convince of royal mail. I think my hermes costs around 3.50? for delivery, a bit more for signed for which this is but I paid £8!

In future I don't know if it is worth checking with sellers but that is why ebay list the delivery methods - not for someone to state royal mail then use a carrier :(

I guess now couriers are cheaper than Royally *ripped off* Mail,
you'll see this question more and more. On the plus side, I guess there will be more couriers with smaller routes, so they will probably get to know their patch better than the postman. I know my myhermes man with all the shoes and clothes the Mrs keeps buying!
