I wouldn't be happy at all in this situation.

I actively look for Royal Mail delivery for small to medium parcels, and don't bid if it's a courier delivery for these types of items.

If somebody had said they'd deliver by Royal Mail but it ended up coming by courier, and I was inconvenienced by it, I'd be marking down their stars.

As a seller I did this yesterday. My car broke down and so I opened a Hermes account so that there would be no delay. I sent a message to the buyers and two have responded saying they are happy with that, I have also refunded them the difference in postal charges. I haven't heard from the other one though.

My own Hermes delivery lady just leaves them in a safe place if I am out I thought they all did that unless a signature is required.

I have to say I sold some stuff on Ebay last week and got caught out by Royal Mail's price hikes - I charged £6 postage but the item just tipped the 2 kilo point, so Royal Mail wanted a hefty £13.30. So it could be that the £8 charged was - unbelievably - not enough.

I wound up using myhermes as well (though did contact the buyer first to check they'd be OK with this) who delivered for £5.60 - a bit different! I wonder if Royal Mail will end up pricing themselves out of the market altogether at this rate.

It's the sellers fault that the buyer is not in to recieve the parcel???

No it's the Sellers fault they have changed carrier without informing the buyer first!

I would be annoyed if i had bought from someone saying they where going to use royal mail and they then used myhermes and made it uncertain if/when i can get my item.

i'm often not home for deliveries but the royal mail collection point for me is within walking distance, it is coupled with the post office so often i can do postage and pick up packages at the same time

the uncertainty of an unexpected courier being used would likely annoy me, if it happened i was in for first attempt it would probably be ok, but if as the op is having to i'd have to go chasing I'd be annoyed as royal mail is so easy for me.

Fine if I have bought from someone advertising courier, but if you have advertised royal mail then use it! or at least contact buyer first to see if it is ok to use courier.

    .

If you bought something from the Mail on Sunday or some hobbiest magazine, they wouldn't even bother to tell you what courier or service they use.

Actually, we used to think of Royally Ripped Off Mail as a service, it's now just a profit making business.

Well that's fine, you make your buying decision without that information and accept you don't know how its coming.

That's not the same as the OP issue, where it WAS stated who the carrier was and the buying decision has been made with that in mind. The seller has then changed it with no agreement from the buyer.

What other companies do is irrelevant. The seller advertised Royal Mail and sent it another way to save themselves money - poor customer service, which has caused unnessecary inconvenience to the buyer. No amount of hilarious puns on the name of Royal Mail will change that.

This wouldn't make any difference to me except that if RM couldn't deliver and sent it to my local collection office that would mean an extra trip out for me and a long wait in the queue (which is always out of the door and down the street as they are very slow!!)
I have noticed recently that some delivery companies say on their cards that they will deliver to 9 pm. I would be much happier with this option.

OK, but maybe I should have explained the context of my point which is that eBay force sellers to choose a description for a sale.
They don't allow you to simply put a default like "economy delivery".

How this impacts sellers the most, is when people buy multiple items from one seller, the ideal service for them to send changes, sometimes in favour of the buyer (they will get insured or signed for service) sometimes in favour of the seller (they will get cheap courier service).

In that context where eBay had forced sellers to state a service in advance, I was comparing with companies in the press and magazines who don't even tell you how something will be sent.

Add to that MyHermes have put prices up 3 times in 3 weeks, and Royally *ripped off* Mail's record price increases this juggling around is also making fixing your mail provider to a specific company more difficult.

I know you will just come back and say if you trade on eBay that's par for the course so Hard Cheese but I'm saying that the balance of this argument needs to take on board sellers issues as outlined.
