The buyer has bought a single item from the seller. There is no excuse for the seller not listing the actual method they are going to use, other than they didn't properly check the cost of the postage. That's the seller's problem, and not one that should inconvenience the seller.

The people who say "myhermes suits me" are missing the point - myhermes DOESN'T suit this buyer, who bought the item on the strength of it being delivered by Royal Mail. I accept that some people prefer couriers and some people prefer Royal Mail - that's why the delivery method is displayed on ebay, so people can pick the appropriate service or seller if the method of delivery is important to them.

OK, but maybe I should have explained the context of my point which is that eBay force sellers to choose a description for a sale.
They don't allow you to simply put a default like "economy delivery".

How this impacts sellers the most, is when people buy multiple items from one seller, the ideal service for them to send changes, sometimes in favour of the buyer (they will get insured or signed for service) sometimes in favour of the seller (they will get cheap courier service).

In that context where eBay had forced sellers to state a service in advance, I was comparing with companies in the press and magazines who don't even tell you how something will be sent.

Add to that MyHermes have put prices up 3 times in 3 weeks, and Royally *ripped off* Mail's record price increases this juggling around is also making fixing your mail provider to a specific company more difficult.

I know you will just come back and say if you trade on eBay that's par for the course so Hard Cheese but I'm saying that the balance of this argument needs to take on board sellers issues as outlined.

The seller does have plenty of space to write in the description something along the lines of "I may change the delivery method stated if for any reason I am unable to send by this method"

It would then had been my choice to bid and if the seller had put something like that - I wouldn't have taken the risk and looked elsewhere.

I am talking about the bigger picture, not this one seller.

Then it's up to the seller to contact the buyer and check this is OK, and have the opportunity to give an alternative address where someone is available to take the parcel in.

It's very poor communication for an item to arrive via a different method to the one advertised without warning - I left low DSR stars for communication for a seller who sent an item recorded when it stated standard delivery in the details, as it meant a trip to the sorting office for me to colelct the item.

I did this myself after Easter.

Buyer won item 26th March - but paid 3rd April after price had doubled. So i thought sod it - and sent myhermes.

But as a rule - seller should always send via agreed method.
  • Reading this has confirmed a decision I had made to offer a choice (on many items).

It's more work but it will allow the buyer to see the huge saving thay make by selecting courier and the opportunity to pay the extra if they wish.

However, as buyers don't usually click to see the alternatives before bidding, and it makes sense to list the courier first, they are likely to conclude that there is no choice so I'll have to highlight that at the beginning of each listing. ie "Your choice of delivery method" in big capitals - Yuch - It tends to look cheap and messy but it seems necessary.

As a buyer I prefer Royal Mail because I know that it will arrive by 1pm. But I'm not willing to pay double or more for the privilage. So I, like all internet buyers will just have to get used to it.

I never know when a courier is going to arrive so saying that it's up to buyers to be at home is just ridiculous. Nobody can guarantee to be at home 24/7

What does annoy me is that couriers seem to be just as bad as RM at NOT leaving cards when you are out. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. In my case with City Link.

Couriers insist on telephone numbers for addressees but never use them !! Why ??? Has ANYONE here had a call from a courier company to arrange or re-arrange delivery ??

Many people don't have a "safe place" for a parcel to be left. Though I do keep meaning to have a word with a neighbour who does seem to be at home a lot so thanks for the reminder.

I have actually received it now. My appointment was cancelled today so i have been around :)

I spoke to the delivery man and asked what happens in these situations, he said had I not been in today (2nd attempt) he would have wrote his telephone number on the card so I could contact him to arrange a suitable time for me :) that has now made me see my hermes in a more positive light (I don't know if this is standard practice nationwide?)

I weighted the parcel and it was 1.3KG would have cost 6.70 by RM and as I paid £8 the seller had no excuse not to use who he originally stated - would you leave neutral or negative for this? or just leave it as all turned out ok in the end (I am certainly not going to leave positive but could just not leave any feedback at all). I would be more inclined to leave it if seller had genuinely underestimated RM cost, but they didn't so have caused this potential hassle just to make a few more pence on the postage cost.

Contact the seller first to see how they respond.

Would your Hermes delivery person not leave the item in a safe place? Mine always does.

I am interested in opinions on this because I have just set up an account with them, and was very impressed with their service. I am thinking of switching to them completely rather than use RM. I wouldn't ask for a signature, but if people dislike couriers then it will reduce buyers.

Do people prefer to pay £5.20 rather than £3.00?

I have just had a collect plus parcel delivered and I asked what he would do if I was out, and he said he would leave in a safe place too unless a signature was needed.

It needed a signature but yes he would leave it in safe place if
it didn't but not everyone has a safe place.

I would prefer the choice, some people are in all day and welcome the savings with carriers some aren't so are happy to pay the extra for royal mail. Unfortunately there is no way to tell it someone states carrier if they are sending it signed for or not.
