I spend a whole day talking about just these things and I come back and find out you're all confessing all over the place.

I think yesterday was national food crime confession day :rotfl:

I'm just popping on my RED apron which has the snazzy logo on it.

RED I'll just remind us all is for 'reduce'.

Miss L - thank you for stepping into the breach whilst I was off wombling. A most fitting punishment.:A
Greying slopes in and nudges up to rtandon27 on the *norty step*

'I Greying have come to confess that I have just thrown out (composted) a 400g punnet of mushrooms :( I bought 2 YS'd punnets earlier in the week with every intention of processing them for meals that we would have throughout September, therefore saving cash. I only processed one punnet, and the other has sat sulking in the fridge. By today the contents have gone past the point of trimming, wiping or resuscitation back into existence. And so had to be cast out. I am guilty of the sin of food waste. :('

Greying hangs head in shame, and awaits lecture............

    :(

Oh dear I lost my post.

    Now - here's low down.

    We're all human.

Mushrooms are sadly one minute 'fungi's and the next sludge, especially when they're whoopsied.

The great food womble boffins of Scotland had a great fridge tip to help just these types of accidents.

Doing a mini fridge hello (audit is the word they used but really its a hello, how are you all and what's the crack) each day will keep you in the loop of what's in there.

A curious thing they found was that the fridge door (where the milk lurks) is vitally under utilised - its a key 'visual' aid in your life.

    The thinking is thus.

If you put foods which need eating up/processing/used quickly in the fridge door shelves it acts as a visual reminder of what you've got that's likely to sulk soonest.

Whist traditionally folks just use it for milk/juice - if you can work a system whereby you pop other items in their too - you'll find that firstly you rearrange the fridge more and keep on top of the loot that's in there. Secondly you're more likely to keep on top of the items which might spoil.

    :)

I've been trying to use it and find it helps - especially with visually challenged hungry teenagers in the house - the fridge door is 'easy' for them so more of that stuff gets munched.

Greying me dear - we've all done it! Whilst its a pity you didn't get time to process the grub - fresh goods often are a law of their own once stickered. You often win, but sometimes you lose.

I'm always in two minds with mushrooms. I love them but no one else in the house eats them. The only thing I've ever managed with a reduced box it to lob them in the freezer for a pasta sauce/soup ingredient later so it doesn't matter if they're whole and a bit random looking when they leave the freezer for better things.

I'm glad Miss L gave you both a bit of time out to think about your crimes whilst I was out at the Science Festival working to promote such practises.

And, now for those cheese crimes.

:eek:Yikes:eek: - slipped yesterday and bought 3 camembert wheels for 35p each! - duly in freezer - SIGH - at least it's not meat?

what does one do when the local shopgirls know you & say - we have an amazing deal - clearing out most of the french cheeses!

got home to find a block of low-fat cheddar, a block of pecorino and a chunk of brie were already having a freezer party! - 3 new friends wrapped against the frost and duly added to the drawer - OH MY the guilt!:o:o:o

(pippi please provide the lecture about impulse grocery bargain buying!)

    :T

Right - well whilst I approve of such barganious cheese and the fact that you hadn't got home to find another 3 wheels of camembert in the freezer too. Imagine if you'd got home and found some of its siblings frozen too!:rotfl:

It does pay to know what you've got before you unsuspectingly set yourself free with a purse and a shopping basket.

I have a list on my freezer (s) which is hard to see with all the other clutter that's stuck to it but its there.

I know that's sad, that's just the way it is at the moment.

Supermarkets aren't really your friend. Whilst they act all shiny and lovely they are really the orchestrators of all things over indulgent.

Its their job to send you home with more food than you can possibly ever consume and have clever guru's to promote such impulse purchases.

    Including cheese.

On the other hand, 3 wheels of cheese for 35p each is an utter bargain, if you'll eat them. How many times have I thrown things in just cos they're a bargain only to wonder what on earth I'll do with them when I get them home.

And as they're wrapped up all snug in the freezer perhaps think about popping them on the list.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

A period of reflection and list making I see in your future.

    Whilst the song might say

'Don't really know what you've got until its gone'

    Its really saying

'You SHOULD really know what you've got before you go out [to the supermarket]'

    :A

Don't worry I'm totally taking my own advice here too!

    :DThank-you (I think) for the lecture!:D

Fridge List is done & Freezer List in about to happen.

Contemplating storage cupboard list as well - but...

...the shelves are shallow & I can see everything that's on it - and they get used & replenished regularly so not really a huge problem...

...it's that dang freezer that scared me...
