A few people have mentioned this and wondered if anyone could answer my question. I'm seeing the consultant for my 16/17 week check rather than a midwife (don't ask) has anyone else had this and did they still listen for the heartbeat? I'm climbing the walls with worry so would love that bit of reassurance but don't want to get my hopes up!

I'm sure the consultant can/will do this :o is the consultant at the hospital when you visit? i did see a consultant, and this was at the hospital and they had all the equipment there so i assume you'll be able to.

just realised ive spent far too much time online today :o ill go out tomorrow, and get away from the lap top lol.....

:rotfl: i could just imagine the conversation aswell lol... :rotfl:

Fritha - Im not sure if its the same but ive had to go to extra antenatals to see the doctors and theyve listened to the heartbeat from when i was about 16 weeks pregnant onwards (i keep bleeding so first thing they check is heartbeat) on top of this from 18 weeks my midwife has checked the heart beat aswell.

Goodluck for your check up - if the doctor doesnt mention about listening to heartbeat maybe you should just ask if s/he would mind listening to put your mind at rest

Thanks Keely, that was really quite helpful, it is at the hospital and yes you're right they would have the equipment (that ctually never occurred to me!)! I spose I shall find out in a week or so when I go and I should try to stop worrying!

Btw, there's no such thing as too much time online ;-)

Edit: missed your post cookie but thanks, you are right, if needs be I need to screw my courage to the sticking place and ask them to listen!

i only go there for my bloods (1 of the woman there am like vampires lol) i tend to go to my gp which is by the labour club, yea your quite closer then i expected to i thought you would of been the other side of wolves - everytime ive tried to get an early appointment with new x they always say they fully booked up and offer me a time around 2.30-3.30 which is really annoying as its always visiting hours so i have to sit like a nutter in the waiting room so my mum can get a parking space before the crowds descend lol

  • Hi All,

Still lurking on here as my little boy was only born on Thursday last week (6 days early) and I don't feel quite ready to jump over to the Parents Club!

I had an episiotomy as part of his birth as he was partly back-to-back and his head got a bit stuck. They are rarely done these days and usually only as part of an assisted delivery because of speed (Ventouse or Forceps - I had to have the latter in the end as two attempts with the Ventouse failed - quite funny seeing the obstetrician going flying backwards after hearing a popping sound as the suction cup come off the babies head - not so funny was the bruising it left behind on the baby). They prefer to let tears happen in the perineum during normal deliveries rather than make incisions (they used a scalpel in my case - don't think they use scissors any more) as they tend to heal better. Stitches are done under the surface of the vaginal wall using dissolving stitches. They are a little uncomfortable to start with - sitting down and getting up can be fun, but I'm not very sore any more with them, and it has only been 4 days.

I couldn't reach to do the perineal massage either - you are supposed to massage inside your vagina (not your a***hole!!) using your (or your partners) thumb or fingers, pressing and holding against the back wall of the vagina until you feel a bit of a tingle. I've found more information about it on Babycentre here http://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/labourandbirth/labour/episiotomyhowtoavoidexpert/ .
