Gosh, your NHS trust sounds terrible pollyanna, I would be livid! Thought my area was a bit pants but at least I got scans.

Managed to get a birthing ball from Argos for 4.99 this morning so a result there. But then went off with my last £30 to Boots for my tens hire, only to be told I also had to give a £25 (refundable) deposit. I nearly started crying lol, cos i only had 30 quid and really can't afford £55 at the moment (not without going overdrawn and incurring a £30 charge, which would bring the grand tens total to £90  ).

So rang tesco and they said they don't do tens hire. Are you sure, I said, cos I have a leaflet in my hand saying you do. :D Finally put me through to the pharmacy who have found me one from a nearby store and are bringing it over later this afternoon. :j £27 and no pesky deposit.

I have it in my head that as soon as I get the tens and the rubber ball blown up I will go into labour, which is why I was so gutted not to get it all sorted this morning - pregnancy logic in overdrive at the moment!

The triple test is a blood test by the way pollyanna, its not a scan. i had mine taken friday just gone.

I was about to say the same thing Keely, I've got mine tmrw, rather grumpy about it atm to be honest. It's a twenty minute drive with laugh-a-minute parking to present my arm and go home! Still forewarned is forearmed and all of that so I'd rather have the faff than not! Anyway back on topic....

Pollyanna, just so you know from what I understand Nuchal scans are offered to ridiculously few women on the nhs and I think they're generally done at the same time as a dating scan if they're done. I really do understand you wanting to check everything's ok with Mini-Pollyanna though, my last scan was er, about four weeks ago now and I've got *counts* five weeks until my next scan and I'm climbing the walls with worry (mine stems from nothing though annoyingly!). As for your boss, try and dig out your contract and see what it says about maternity leave in there it should give you a starting point so going to see your boss and refusing to leave his office until he discusses it! Good luck!

btw congrats on maternity leave cluuuuur :-)

Pollyanna, just wanted to add-when you see your midwife, she'll be able to listen in to the baby's heartbeat and you'll hear too (i had mine for first time friday, so for me was 16 weeks)...this put me at ease as i knew my baby was ok so maybe this will put you at ease too?

Please don't stress too much, try and relax. Stress is no good for baby! As someone said to me the other day when i was getting wound up 'time for a cuppa and a sit down!' lol......

The time to worry is if you get bad pains and bleeding together, so long as you get your bp monitored and everything when you see your midwife-you should be ok.

    Hope you feel calmer/happier

That's the one cookie. It's not a specific maternity one but I figure there can't be that much difference - they are all just big inflatable plastic balls after all! It doesn't have a pump with it though so will require puff power.

Pollyanna - nothing to add to the advise given but just wanted to say my midwife listened to my baby heartbeat at 18 weeks (would of been 16 weeks but because of the christmas holidays it had to be first week in jan), so hopefully listening to your baby heartbeat will put you at ease, keelykats right just relax and try to take it easy (i no easier said then done) all the best and take care x

Everyone else - trying not to sound really dumb here but whats a episiotomy? (also expecting first baby) and like pollyanna asked how do you prevent it?

The episiotomy is where they have to make a small cut if the vagina is not stretching enough for the baby's head to get out. One way to avoid this is to stretch the vaginal wall with massage (the area called the perinaeum - sp?) to get it malleable before the birth. I've tried this recently but, um, can't reach. :D OH's reaction to "can you give my a***hole" a massage cos i can't reach" was priceless. :D

A few people have mentioned this and wondered if anyone could answer my question. I'm seeing the consultant for my 16/17 week check rather than a midwife (don't ask) has anyone else had this and did they still listen for the heartbeat? I'm climbing the walls with worry so would love that bit of reassurance but don't want to get my hopes up!
