could someone answer :
do you get SMP if you pay NI and tax on your wage, and maternity allowance if you earn under that level. ( do they both pay £112 per week)? and would I still get working and child tax credits whilst on maternity.
many thanks just trying to work out how to pay the mortgage and bills . Thanks0 -
I think I must be lucky with my employer then!! I get 100% for 13 weeks and was told by HR that it was 10% more than they have to pay.
I've checked the DWP website and information on SMP, whether you qualify for it or Statutory Maternity Allowance, and the information can be found here http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/statutory_maternity_pay.asp .0 -

Just though I would add my tuppence.
I am almost 12 weeks pregant and going for the Nuchal test tonight. I'm having to go private as my gp, midwife and hospital all seem to be a bit parp.
At first I thought it was good because I got sent for two early scans as I panicked a bit when I was spotting. These scans gave me my due date.
When I went to see the midwife at 11 weeks, I got told there was no scan at 12 weeks due to funding, so I am lucky that I actually have had any scans so far at all.
My next appointment with her is at 16 weeks and my friend has just asked me what choice of hospital was I given. I said none and that I wasn't even told where I would be having it (there is a assumption of Watford as it is a big hospital), and she said this was bad as after 16 weeks, I will have no choice but to go there and seeing as they are so bad with scans, maybe I should add to move somewhere else.
I told the midwife about my brother being born at 24 weeks and my mum having pre eclampsia, and the fact that I was born at 34 weeks, and she just didn't seem that bothered, but going by the comments above, maybe she should have taken more notice!
I was offered the "Triple Test" at 16 weeks, but really wanted to see my baby before that which is why I've opted for the Nuchal scan at a private clinic. Are they one and the same or is one better than the other?
Finally, sorry for the waffle, but this is my first pregnancy, my boss is avoiding the subject of maternity leave etc. How can I ask him about maybe giving me more money during maternity (I suppose this will mean I will have to come back to work after a year)? He is a one man band, so there is no option of going to a HR department or anything like that.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

The triple test is a blood test by the way pollyanna, its not a scan. i had mine taken friday just gone.
You sound like you live in a bad area for this kind of thing-i wouldnt be happy either! Im lucky ive been well looked after so far, and have had choice of hospitals etc too.
I think maybe because you had an early scan, they wont give you another one untill around 20 weeks for the anomoly scan. you dont get that many scans if all is going well anyway, ive got an extra 22 week scan for bp and other reasons.
I think youre best to keep asking/naggin until you get answers and are happy.Mommy to Elliot (5) and Lewis (born xmas eve 11!)0 -

Thanks for that Keelykat. I'm not sure what I expected when I went to see the midwife, but I just thought there would be "something more." Maybe I forget that women have babies every day of the year and it's just another expense to the NHS, I don't know.
I don't want to continually ring up the midwife as I don't actually have any questions at the mo. I just thought they might check me out a bit more often due to my mums having such problems (I appreciate this was a long time ago, but still...)
If I hadn't had those early scans (which detected I was two weeks out with my dates), I wouldn't know when I was due. Regardless of whether I'd had early scans or not, 12 weeks scans just aren't done in my area. Couldn't really see anything babylike at 7 weeks, so just wanted a 12 week scan for reassurance that it's growing. Just a shame I have to £150 for the priviledge when I've spent roughly £12,000 on NI over the last 10 years (just worked that one out, bit of a shocker!)
One more questions for all you ladies out there, what can I do to prevent an episiotomy? I have no idea why, but the thought of this terrifies me more than anything else to do with giving birth.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
