MSE pregnancy club II

Re maternity leave - I can see some people leaving it as long as possible, but I just wondered if there was anyone in a similar position to me as I don't think I'll be able to do this.

I travel into London every day on two trains which involves quite a bit of walking as well. The whole journey is 1 1/2 hours (so 3 hours a day in total). Obviously can't guarantee a seat, and London being London... I'm sure I'll be too scared to ask for one!

When do people who travel like this give up work? I'm trying to save all my hols to take before maternity leave, but I still don't know when would be a good time to stop. 30 weeks maybe?

At the moment, I feel like complete parp and wish I could stop now, but I know once I reach 12 weeks (so people have said), I will start feeling more human again.

Pollyanna,

bring up your travelling as part of your risk assessment - if there's a possibility you could change the hours or the place you work in your employer should be able to help. I was allowed to change the branch I worked in for a while, but I stopped at 29 weeks as even that was too much. As a last resort get your doctor to sign you off for a few weeks. If you can combine that with any spare holidays then you may get a bit more breathing space that way.

Thanks lostbuckaroos. I work for a one man band (a solicitor in Central London), so no chance of moving anywhere else.

The job I do is okay, i.e. get to sit down all day which will help, but I think I will find the travelling a bit too much once I get to a certain stage. I just don't know what that stage is. Because I live quite far out and because I work 8-4 (so slightly out of rush hour times), I am almost guaranteed a seat on the way to work, but it's still a lot and there's quite a bit of walking involved as well.

Guess I'm just looking forward to finishing asap and never coming back, but I don't want to finish too early as I want the most paid time I can get at home with baby. Just don't know when will be the right time as I've never been pregnant before.

When do I even start properly showing so that I can guilt trip the people on the train by practically shoving the bump in their face on the way home when I mightn't get a seat? :rotfl:

If you're not sure at the moment remember that you don't have to give your notice until 15 weks before the baby is due and you can always change your mind after that. You usually have to give 28 days notice of change but if you're employer is nice then they should take less. Not sure when I started showing properly - I think I just started to feel that I looked really pregnant about a month ago (at 30 weeks). Saying that, I've one of the smallest bumps in my ante natal class so I guess every bump is different. You could always get a baby on board tshirt as a subtle hint!

hy all

I got a growth scan tomorrow (will be my fourth scan) and just wondered wat to expect? Is it like the 12 week scan & 20 week scan (I also had emergency scan at 16 weeks), im getting totally freaked out about it. Any ideas on what to expect would be great - If it helps on Saturday just gone (15th) i was 28 weeks.

Pollyanna, I do not travel anywhere near as long as you, but I too work in Central London and it can be very draining!And my travelling is around 2 hours max! I finish work officially the day before I'm due as I'm always late and I too need the max amount paid/with baby, as I'm back to work in January.Your travelling time is a lot and I can tell you now,whether you show or not-no-one feels guilty about sitting there pretending they cannot see you standing in London,lol.I've been offered a seat about twice and I'm 33 weeks!
As soon as you feel it too much, listen to your body and pack up shop, so to speak! I do hope you start to feel better soon!

ask them to move for you if u need to sit down dont be embarresed about it.

if the bus is full i will ask to sit down if the person sitting is more capable than i am they very rarely refuse as they know the entire bus is watching them:D

Cookie - I had a growth scan at 35 weeks ( because of my high BP) and they just check the size of babies limbs/head etc and also they check the amount of fluid surrounding the baby and the blood flow threw the cord. They will give you an estimated weight ( Mine was 6lb 2) so no probs there. Didnt get any pictures this time due to the size of my baby but at 28 weeks you may get some. Good luck for tomorrow:p
