    Congratulations!

I'm with Rosie-Lee on the birth stories, people seem to get some perverse pleasure out of scaring Mums to be with labour stories. I would say though to read some positive birth stories in order to prepare yourself as I know when I had my DD I didn't have a clue about what would really happen and that would made it a lot worse. I'd recommend visiting http://www.homebirth.org.uk/ whether you're planning a home birth or not its full of lots of positive birth stories that weren't all text book cases. Also I would really recommend this book Guide to Childbirth it is American so some of the references aren't 100% relevant however its still a great read. The start of the book's full of birth stories that aren't written to scare the life out of you; and the second half focuses on making your body work for you. The important thing about the birth is to be prepared, being scared will slow labour down so knowing what's going to help with your body is very useful.

I'd say instead of muslins invest in some cheap thin tea towels, wash them well with lots of fabric softener; they'll do the same job plus so many more (provided you're not using muslins in nappies!) and they're considerably more absorbant.

Stock up on baby wipes, cotton wool, baby bath etc as its stuff that'll always come in handy. I'd say you can have a dedicated changing station upstairs but the chances are it'll become redundant fairly quickly as you have to change a lot of nappies. Instead I'd get a storage box with a handle (you can get them from Mothercare type places) and put your changing essentials in there; and keep a changing mat downstairs too, then you won't be running up and down the stairs a million times a day.

Don't buy too many cute outfits, chances are they won't get put on that often and friends and relatives will buy plenty as gifts. Instead make sure you have a good supply of vests and sleepsuits so you're not constantly washing.

Don't be afraid to say to people would you mind leaving visiting until another day. When I had my DD the first week I saw more friends and relatives than I had in the last year; it was very nice but also quite overwhelming, I'm sure most people will understand.

    Hope that helps!

I would tell all your friends that you are willing to accept offers of baby clothes. Even if you only use the vests and babygros, it means that you can save money for the things that you really want to buy. Dont be silly about it, cos all those things can go in the washer and come up lovely.

Freecycle usually has lots of baby equipment so try on there.

Best advice, just enjoy your baby! You never have another love quite like the one with your child. Its the best!
  • Hi pink princess 1 - i have seen dopplers on the internet that say they work from 10 weeks. i am only considering it as i will not see a midwife until 13 weeks and so they will not book my scan until then so cant see it being on time!!
  • Hi; Am planning a holiday abroad and will need typhoid and hepatitis A injections; travelling to North Africa but want to start trying for a baby in the very near future i.e. in the next couple of weeks ... do I / don't I have the injections, advice please!

    Hiya

    Congratulations.

Knowing what I know now if I was having a baby this is what I would buy.

    1. Cot and bedding (not cot bed I think that in the long term its better to have a cot and then a bed that an adult can sleep in).
    2. Pushchair or Pram suitable for your lifestyle
    3. Car seat
    4. Reusable nappies
    5 Basic babygrows and vests
    6. Reusable nappies
    7. Loads of cheap flannels and several hand towels for mopping up and wiping bums and faces.
    8. A bouncer chair which gives you chance to put bubs down for a second

Also you need to consider how your going to feed. You'll need to get a bottles etc if your going to formula feed and life is much easier for a breast feeder with feeding bras.

You will get loads of presents so let them by the cute clothes. Lastly dont dismiss 2nd hand stuff. I got a lovely Mamas & Papas pram and pushchair that had had minimal use I bought a new car seat to go with it and had a fab travel system.
