  • Hi Bun,

i was told not to have my scan until 20 weeks despite that they are going to look for markers, i was told that this was so the cages of the heart could be seen clearer, although they still might not be able to see it at 20 weeks. I have been told that sometimes markers are found with downs babies and sometimes they aren't so the scans aren't conclusive. What sort of impression were you given about the scan showing up problems. My odds are 1 in 170 so lower risk than yours but i am still incredibly worried. Are you going to have any further tests? how did you decide what to do? Sorry to ask so many questions but we are about the same stage.

    Hi 3kidsnomoney,

No problem with the queries! They went through all the things they could see that were ok, kidneys, evidence that they were working properly, stomach dimensions, spine, lips and mouth area, brain etc, so I got the impression that they do take the scan seriously for this sort of thing. I know somebody who's baby had the windpipe linking directly to the stomach, and this was found by scan and sorted out just after birth, so they are obviously used to catching problems. The heart wasn't clear enough but I'll find this out next week, but if they seemed confident that the nasal area was as intact as it could be, which is quite good as 70% of down's babies don't have it, so that is good enough for me. If it had been one of the other chromosomal problems I may have considered an amnio but would have continued a downs pregnancy so that influences my decision. To be honest, I'm terrified of a miscarriage from the amnio (probably irrationally so) so if it will reassure you then an amnio may be the best thing for you as it is conclusive, if you are in the time frame. One of my friends I have just found out had odds of 1.34, and 1.35 and had amnios with no problems. Both are fine, and this was with problems in the family.

  • Bun, congrats on finding out your having a little 'pink' one, i can't wait to find out-weeks to go till that stage though! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all you ladies who are ready and waiting, heres hoping it's short, sweet and relatively pain free. X
  • Thanks for that Bun, reall glad for you that your scan went ok. I can see why you are reassured and because you would carry one with a downs pregnancy i can understand why you feel OK about it. Also great to hear about other people who have had amnios and been ok. Great that they will scan you twice - i was only given the option of 20 week scan and not an earlier one.

I keep jumping from feeling really silly because my odds are still quite low and some peoples are much higher, to thinking i could be the 1 in 170. Will see what the scan shows and go from there.

Because i have had 3 healthy children before and never had any real problems with the pregnancies, this time round has been a real shock. it was a big decision for me and my OH to decide to have another child.

But I have woken up with pain in the lower right hand side of my bump - pain when I move, breathe, or don't move and don't breathe. I hate self diagnosis but Google says this is 'the' sign of appendicitis. I expected it to be somethign to do with the head engaging or the baby turning. Ignore it or bother the docs? I hate going to the doctors. Apart from the antenatals obviously. Not a fear or anything. Just feel like I use up more valuable time!

    Hi Fac73

funnily enough I had pains under my bump last week that I was convinced must be the start of labour (although I have a bigger one I never experienced labour due to emergency c. section) however I didn't bother the midwife as it was quite late and I figured I'd know for sure by the morning, anyway it must have been BH I think as they came and went ....ho hum!!

Oh and then I read this :-

    which says it all really!

must stop thinking I'm going to have an early birth lol!

    Congratulations Looby-lou!
3kidsnomoney- thanks for the thanks as it were! I really wouldn't worry that you are concerned about a lower reading - it is how you feel about it that counts. I hope you find your scan reassuring and get to decide from there.

ps. sorry, I'm stuck on itallics with no idea why

ooh relief at last... saw my kinesiologist tonight to sort out the back pain i picked up on Friday. As it's all related, the bits that hurt on the lower back on the pelvis are matched by sore bits on and to the sides of the pubic bone, so got to rub those 3 times a day for 5 days for about 15 secs or so (enough to make it hurt!) and that should keep it at bay for a while.
Also advised against wearing too flat shoes as have been in trainers since friday - my insteps are virtually non-existant so make the pain worse!
And if any of you find any pain on the tip of your heel, that's pelvic related too :)

Only 4 more days in work until i can have a week and a bit off... with a 5+ hour drive to get there!

Keeping your legs uncrossed Septemberbaby? Hope it's all going well!
