I know cramps are part and parcel of pregnany (I'm about 28 weeks now) but this is truely awful. Does anyone know what I can do / add to my diet / etc to reduce the power of the cramps?
I think you're supposed to have calcium-rich foods like milk, and bananas (unless I've dreamt that bit :o) for leg cramps - it's something to do with calcium and potassium, I think.

I'm almost 27 weeks and I've had one leg cramp so far. When I was pg with DS, I used to get them occasionally - not every night but maybe once or twice a week or so. Anyhoo, this time round I decided to do something about it, so I've been doing quick stretching exercises before bedtime - just literally flexing my foot up and down. Touch wood, it seems to be working - I think I even subconsciously do them in my sleep now. :D

Good luck, and hope this might help a bit - those cramps are not nice

shortie make sure your salt levels are ok as well as that can increase cramps. Mine have been much better since I started doing some exercise that includes stretches - for your calf this is a good stretch (you don't need to rest against the wall but you may find holding onto something helps your balance) http://www.dcdoctor.com/pages/rightpages_wellnesscenter/homeexercises/back/stretches/exer_back_st_calf.html

for your back do some pelvic tilts http://www.yogaeverywhere.com/pregnancy/pregnancy_3.html
I also find doing side stretches good

don't do them lying on your back though as you can trap a vein - also make sure that you're getting out of bed in the correct way... roll onto your side facing the edge of the bed, swing the legs over the edge as you do so sit up, then stand up.

I've felt much better since doing my exercise (Davina DVD if you're interested) and have had fewer calf cramps.

Thanks for the tips everyone on the cramps. Never even thought of salt levels, and to be honest healthy eating has gone out of the window the last week or so as it's been uuuber busy at work, blah, blah.

Plenty of water for me, a healthy diet again and some stretches

    Thanks again :T :T

Shortie, just read this on the mothercare.com website:

    Don’t cramp your style
As you get heavier, you might start to suffer from cramp because your womb is pressing on the nerves to your legs. To help:
    • With your leg straight, pull your toes up towards you. If you can’t reach your toes get a friend to help, or sit down on a chair and push the underside of your toes against the edge of a table, keeping your leg straight.
    • Up your intake of calcium (in dairy foods, sardines and mackerel) and lower your intake of phosphorus (in processed meats and fizzy drinks).

Thanks SeptemberBaby. I'm drinking more fluids today and eating my usual porridge/bioyoughurt combo for breakfast, and making sure I eat fruits again as I slipped for a while on the healthy eating :o

I did some stretches last night too before bed but will try what you put

    Thanks again
