Dogs on settees?

  • My dog, large akita, has never wanted to go on the sofa or bed. She hates most dog beds too, I think it's down to them being soft under her feet and she likes firm ground only, she loves to be on the floor and nice and cool.

  • My mum doesn't like ours on the sofas in the living room but one of my dogs hates having his coat on so would jump the baby gate and dive on the sofa to his mummy like 'Mummy, they put my coat on! Save me!' and she thought that was adorable so he got away with that. Then the other dog got in on it and realised if he did his 'I'm cute, I just want a cuddle' act, he'd get up as well. Crafty dogs! Overall though, they're not supposed to go up and they know it.
We did get new sofas not long ago and I spent about three weeks getting my point across that the dogs would like one of the old sofas in their room to lounge around on. I got told that it wouldn't fit in that room with their crates and the cupboards and things - I made it fit. Now you tend to find the pair of them snuggled up with me on their sofa!
Somebody else mentioned dogs going upstairs and agreed on that - ours aren't allowed upstairs. The only times they go upstairs is for bath time and I think they're starting to realise upstairs isn't that great of a place for them! Although I do often find Billy making a break for it upstairs and find him stood in my bedroom. He went up one day ages ago and I had a tub of biscuits open and I walked in and he had his head in the tub scoffing them! Now, when he runs up, he makes a beeline to see what food I have!
