Reclaim Unfair Bank Charges article discussion Part II

I live in Germany with the Armed forces and I am charged, as if I am on holiday here, everytime that I take money out of my account!
I complained to the Abbey (who I bank with) and told them that I would like my charges repaid to me. My husband banks with the Halifax and they dont charge him.
They took 8 weeks to reply and when they did they said that I can't have my money back as it is Visa who charge them everytime I use the cashpoint. I dont use a Visa credit card, its a debit card! It is actually the same type of card that my husband has with the Halifax and if they don't charge him, why is my bank charging me?
Do you think I have a case to take this further?
Thanks, Tracy0 -
I dont think you would be able to claim any of them back as the fees relate to overseas use. You would be much better switching to the Nationwide as they dont charge and fees for taking money out overseas.
If the Halifax has a deal for forces overseas (they normally charge as well I believe) then it might be worth opening a second account with them if your husband already has one.0 -
You can't claim back ATM fees and it does depend on who "owns" the ATM as to if you will be charged for using it, same as it is using them in this country.0

Would it be worth my while phoning the bank again today and telling them that I will be making a complaint or even go to my local branch as I read one ladies story that when she went into the bank she recieved her info two days later.
Thanks
Amanda
Hi i think you are talking about me i bluffed my statements i went in to my branch and basically said that i needed my statements threw as i had a problem with my rent and it had come back to me, i think that they felt sorry for me because they thought i was going to be kicked out. Dont get me wrong though this probably wont work with everyone i just thought that i would give it a try. My husband is still waiting for his and he sent his the same day. If you want to try it that is up to you.0 -
i didnt need my statements as i had them all online (from the halifax).
i sent off my claim letter and within 2 weeks got the rejection letter.
i sent back my next letter stating a reply within 14 days which passed on friday.
should i phone the number on the letter or is it too late as i have responded with that letter?0 -
Hi, i'm trying to reclaim 110.00 worth of charges with the Abbey for a dyslexic friend, i have follwed all of the steps and when i received an unstaisfactory response from them i threatened court, they said they would pass it on to another department and get back to me, since then i have sent them another letter stating that i wanted it settled on a certain date and assumed that would be that but no i hadnt received anything, so i emailed them asking what the problem was and was told it had been passed on to another department and have heard nothing back since may 12th, unfortunately my friend doesnt have the 30.00 needed to take the abbey to court and i cant afford to pay it for her either. Apart from contacting them again (and again...) what do you suggest?
many thanks

Hi, please can someone enlighten me!
I requested my six year statements and eventually received them after the 40 days but Nov 01 - Nov 04 were missing. I've requested these missing ones three times from Barclays but they just keep sending me exactly the same copies minus the Nov 01 - Nov 04. I spoke to the complaints section yesterday who told me that they have sent the bi-monthly summary statements for that period only, because there are no charges. Looking at them though, I have gone over my overdraft on a couple of occasions. He said he would get them to me for today anyway but all I've received this morning are copies of the bi-monthly summary statement again. Why are they not sending the actual statements to me - can I trust Barclays telling me there are no charges for that period?0 -
Hi everyone,
I've just worked out my charges & Lloyds TSB have had £5114 (exculuding any added interest) worth of illegal charges off over the past 6 years!
I've trimmed my claim to £4,999 to keep it below the £5,000 small claims threshold.
Reading through posts both here & on CAG; It would seem that Lloyds TSB are the only bank that seem to be "dragging their heels" in settling their customers claims against these illegal charges. Am I right in this assumption..Or is it that all the banks are settling claims under £2,000 without much fuss?
Regards

I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to Martin and everyone else on this site who are so helpful and encouraging....
This morning I received a letter from the Natwest offering me the full amount I had claimed for, £4936.....
I could not believe it and I am so happy......
I started the claim on 23rd Feb when I requested my statements, so I dont think its taken too long....
Now if only Lloyds would do something with both the claims with the small claims court......!!!!!!!!!
did your natwest claim include interest0 -
Hello there everyone
I've been reading and taking your advice on here for some months now -so thanks for that, now I have a question over the stressful experience I am having in claiming £5000 of charges back from HSBC.
To cut a long story short, I just got a standard acknowledgement from HSBC after 4 weeks of them receiving my letter asking for a refund of unfair charges. So, I filed on MCOL and they acknowledged, then filed a defence, which seems to be the same one as a lot of people have had on here.
Now MCOL have referred my case to my local court, and in the form I received it says that the judge has decided to dispense with the allocation questionnaire. From reading the posts on here, people normally get them and I'm concerned as to why the MCOL judge has decided I don't need to complete one.
It has been 2 weeks now since MCOL sent the details to my local court and I called them this morning and they said that I will have a date soon.
Can anyone tell me why I haven't got to complete an AQ and most importantly, offer me some words of encouragement? I don't want the !!!!!!s to beat me but I'm getting a bit worn down by this process now!!
Thanks all x0
