What is ment by "Total charges" in what you can claim back,

"Total charges (HSBC personal accounts only, not business accounts)"

Does it mean you cannot claim back all the charges on a business accout ?
  • You need to check with HSBC what they term as total charges but as regards a business account you can't reclaim the charges for having a business account such as for paying in cheques/cash, receiving change, annual overdraft review.

You need to be careful with this as there has been a case of a user who started and completed the claim and all the monies ended up in the ex's account and they weren't prepared to hand over half!

Make sure your current address is on all correspondence and make it clear from the start which account you would like any monies reclaimed put into. Have a read of this thread...

    Hi,
I would suggest requesting all your bank statements for the last 6 years, phone them and ask them how much it would cost to receive statements for your account for the 6 years (or since accoutn was open if less than this) then write to them (including a cheque for the amount they've stated) asking them to send you a copy of you statements, when you get this go through and make a list of any charges that have ben taken including the type of charge (late payment fee, unauthorised overdraft charge) date and amount and if the charge has been paid back note this next to appropriate charge with the date it was paid.

Then total up how much it is and minus the charges already paid back. Then put in a claim to financial ombudsman for that amount using the form that Martin did which can be found here
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges.

Phone them and tell them that you would like them to explain why they are asking for £800 in the first place and why you still owe £300 when you have paid £545 of the £800.

Hope this is of some help, other people may also be able to help more.

  • If you ask for all statements the bank will more than likely you charge you per statement, you must put in a SAR request using the first letter in Martin's article here and send them a cheque for £10 under the DPA rules.
