hmmm... I recently took delivery of a Fujitsu i5 machine and its a huge disappointment, I am not even playing games its just office and database work and it hardly feels much better than the previous generation machine it replaced, although in its favour battery life is good which is important for me, even running full brightness and its built in 3G modem always on, its good for a few hours. The i5 doesn't benchmark much quicker than an i3, but an i7 is a big leap.

My attitude has been you can always live with short comings in peripheral parts but the one thing that shortens a computers lifetime, is the one thing that's hardest to fix, a lack of oomph under the bonnet, an extra £100 now may extend the period of happiness with it by a couple of years saving money long term.

Agree about the annoying tosh preloaded on systems, why I have never bought a PC with an operating system and loaded a fresh OEM copy each time, laptops are a bit trickier as they tend to have custom hardware drivers to worry about.

Also about the rucksack :D a 3kg laptop isn't going to kill him!

How much is a suitable 17.3" i7? That's the problem.

I can't imagine that the nephew will be trying to game and watch TV at the same time, so that kind of heavy duty multi-tasking is out. All the other everyday types are covered. If I can, he can. Lack of extra performance may be an issue with having a HDD, instead of an SSD.
Backpack helps you not to 'forget' your expensive laptop everywhere and keeps your hands free.

Well I got waylaid on Sunday by the problem with the Dell desktop then got tired and then back to work and then never got round to buying the Ainol. Bad move as its now gone up from £149.99 to £299.99
So sorry to waste everyone's time as I've got to start again now. Good job she's not 70 for a couple of months.
So any more suggestions welcome. TIA.

Hello, I'd appreciate some feedback on the tablet you buy please.

    Thank you
    Richard

It's the least I can do after I hijacked your thread - so sorry!
It might not be quick enough feedback for you though.
It's not dispatched yet and then I won't see grandma for about 2 weeks after it arrives. She's not supposed to have it til her birthday but I think I'll give it to her early because otherwise I'm wasting some of the time of the warranty.

Well the Ainol tablet has arrived.
Thanks to rwalton for letting me hijack the thread.
Gma is going or be v pleased with it.
It's very good value and I've been messing about with it all day.
I've set up her google ac and got the apps installed so its all ready for her to use on her birthday.
The screen is responsive, the keys are good, the speed is good.
Has a lot of glare on the screen. its like a mirror but that might improve when I mess with the settings.
The on switch is fiddly and not great for the elderly hands but she'll manage with that. I don't like the fact it hasn't got a home button like the ipad. I don't think its got a battery indicator either so not sure when it needs charging.
Its easy to use and as she's had experience with ipad and iPhone she'll soon know her way round.
Connected to the Internet easily. It's quick when browsing to different websites. She will want to do screen shots so must remind myself how she does that.
Is nice and slim and looks good.
    All in all very happy.
Thanks to sg for your advice.
I'd recommend mad4pads anytime. They sent me a Royal Mail tracking number. It didn't track so I emailed them and they said they couldn't track it either so they sent another one out to me and that tracked fine and arrived 4 days later.
They replied to my emails on the day or next day as I emailed them late at night. I was nervous as I hate on line places without phone numbers but I needn't have been as they were excellent.
    Thanks to all who helped.

Changing the brightness setting has totally improved the glassy glare effect - thanks sg :)
There is a battery level indicator

Hi just wondering how it's going with the Ainol Novo tablet given that we've decided to buy a tablet? Unfortunately, your guys have again put the price up to £299 so presumably they havent got any. However, it seems Amazon can still supply direct from China but the price then works out at about £170. Does this still represent good value given that we "only" want to use it for browsing, email and watching films (no gaming) or are there are better deals around which anyone can recommend? We're not averse to i-pads and that kind of money but if this sort of cost is avoidable . . . well, I for one would be grateful. Thanks:)
