I used to live down Margate road (was 2002)

I wanted to stay down there but I couldnt afford the flat on my own. A few months after I moved home one of my friends moved out and we could have sorted it.

Love it. Cant sing highly enough about the place. and yes, PUP.

Before we bought our first house in January this year, we rented for 13 years. Lived in the same rented house in Yorkshire for all those years & landlady charged us £260 for 9 years then put it up to £286 for the last 4 years before we moved out. A tidy little 2 bedroomed terrace but old fashioned when we first moved in with hardly any updating before she rented to us.

Wasn't bad considering other 2-3 bed terraced houses in the street were going for £400-£450 a month. LL never did anything much to the house over the years mind, but we decorated & looked after it well so probably why she never whacked it any higher.

She'll certainly be getting a lot more rent now I suspect as when we moved out they started demolishing half of the upstairs to make a 3rd bedroom & other alterations............
A very bad experience when we gave her notice after being model tenants for 13 years & she then became landlady from hell the final few weeks, but that's another story lol.

Our mortgage isn't even double the rent we paid & thats for a 90k 2 bed semi, so in our experience, if you can buy rather than rent, it can actually be cheaper. Depending on where you live though! Where we live now is actually cheaper to buy than rent.
Sorry if I lost track of the main subject lol.

£1250 pm for a detached 2 bed house in Greater London (zone 6). Although its only 2 bed, the place is massive, all the rooms are large(bedrooms are both 18 x 14 feet) we have two downstairs reception rooms (one could be used as a 3rd bedroom) and a huge hallway. It's a lot less than similar sized properties round here, but the price we pay reflects the condition of the property (pretty run down and unfinished) and the general lazy attitude of the landlord (outer pane of double glazed window was smashed 18 months ago by a stone thrown up from the council cutting grass near the property and it remains unfixed to this day).

It was originally advertised for £1650 pm a couple of years back.

Some friend of mine who had been living in 'tied' accommodation in London for about 20 years (peppercorn rent) had to move out and when they were researching, mentioned that they thought rents were pretty reasonable and maybe their peppercorn rent wasn't so peppercorn after all

Then I pointed out that the properties they were looking at were priced by the week - not the month!

    EEK!

I rented a big converted farmhouse for several years. Three beds, the main one having an ensuite and attached reading room and balcony with views over open countryside. Dining room, reception, living room, two open fires, two bathrooms, conservatory, garage, grounds with gardens and a stream... for £525 a month. Beat that.
  • I'm currently in Glasgow paying £400 for a two bedroom with shared garden which seems to be cheap(ish) in the area. Currently looking for a three bedroom in a better area but seem to be priced out of the market. It's looking at double our current rent for a decent place.

The rents quoted seem to vary significantly for everyones properties on the forum. I was wondering how do your rental costs compare with your incomings. We are around 20% just now but would have to move closer to 45-50% to get a place we want.

Why do agents in London insist on doing that? Annoys the *$%£ out of me. If the rent is to be paid monthly they should advertise a monthly rent. Simples. Having to multiply everything by 4.33333 to get a useful figure is just stupid.

Anyway, I live in Blackheath, London. It's in zone 3 and a very pleasant area. My partner and I live in a 1 bed conversion flat with a very large living room and large bedroom, lots of nice period features, communal garden and 1 parking space. £1050.
