For the international perspective, we (OH and I) pay around 2,600 GBP per month for a 3-bed house and garden in a small village by lake Geneva in Switzerland. We were extremely lucky to find it as it's a bargain, many of my colleagues pay similar amounts for flats and for fewer bedrooms.
Fortunately, salaries are very high here so it doesn't make a great hole in take-home pay. And I get this view every day (at least when there are no clouds obscuring the Alpes anyway)!Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

The block of flats my son is in have flats (good size 2-bed, 1 bath, garage, communal gardens, 1970s,) to rent for £450-£500 pcm. Wolverhampton, twelve miles from Birmingham.
Luckily he is buying his flat for less than that(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I used to live in Portsmouth and I think it depends on the area. I've lived in Summerstown twice and paid about £700 for a 3/4 bed house, garden, GF bathroom, large kitchen and one reception room (other was turned into bedroom number 4). The maisonette off St pauls road was £550pm for 2 double beds, not much living space and communal gardens. No parking. A flat just on albert road (Tesco metro end) was about £690 for two bed no garden and no parking and bills on top.
Round here you pay about £500 for a studio and anythign from £800 up for a nice house in an ok area.

Really interesting, the new place is off the end of Albert road and the current one is by the common. I lived in Somerstown last year and you will not catch me returning!!0 -

I used to live by the Tesco metro down albert road and that was great (could see kens from the living room).
It wasnt a great flat and there was little insulation towards the back of the flat which meant it was cold.
The common area of pompey is nice but you'll be paying for the location.
Someone I worked with paid the same for a 2 bed flat in a high rise near the common as I paid for a 3/4 bed house off fawcett road because from the living room with a squint and a mirror you could see the sea.
I would have no problems moving to Somerstown again. They've been planing to do it up for a while now and with Portsmouth becoming more desirable I dont think it'll be long before its sorted. And I think once you shut your door you could be anywhere. It would be the parking I was after.
