I would also go with the permanent NHS job over the other temporary one. It will pay off in the end. So you might have to add a couple of months onto your debt free date - hardly the end of the world. You would soon adjust to the new budget and your wife would probably be thrilled that you had got a good, decent paying and permanent job as well, so that should be less stress at home and less worry for her about how you will both cope when she is on maternity leave. I get the impression that the NHS job is the one you want in your heart --- go with it.

She agrees that either of the jobs alone would be worth it.

She sees Dorking as being too far, and is concerned that I would wipe myself out. Most of all she's now upset about my finances and is p!ssed off that lack of money to take the train every day has anything to do with my decision.

    I'm really upset now.

Oh foxy, I'm sorry - that seems very unfair of her! Can you look into any season tickets loans/deals that the NHS may do? What about taking the train some of the way with your bike and then cycling the rest of the way? That would cut down the cost of the tickets and also the wear and tear on your bike.

How much would a monthly season ticket cost on the train? Would it really not be worth it? Remember that when your wife goes on maternity leave you'll be able to use the car for several months too...

To be brutally honest, I can't understand your wife's attitude - presumably when she's on maternity leave she'll have to be more reliant on you & your income, so I don't understand why she's not more prepared to help you out now while she's able to

I would also say the Dorking job as it's more in a field you want to develop in and it's permanent, so you won't have the worry of having to job hunt whilst she's on maternity leave.

The cost of commuting always plays a part in whether a job is 'worth it' financially, whether you've got debts or not - no point taking a job that brings in £100 more a month if the travel will cost an extra £150!

Now I'm really stressed about both jobs and don't want either of them!!!

With Covent Garden I get half an hour more with my daughter every day in the morning. I wouldn't have to leave until 7:30, whereas Dorking requires me to leave by 7:00, and I would have to work later on Friday to make up time anyway.

That might've swung it, but Dorking has so much going for it.

    Still not convinced.

    Going for a walk.

Ugh. I hate decisions! But you seem to consider things very thoroughly and I am sure you will make the right decision for you. One thing I would say is that sometimes we just have to go with our heart when tough decisions are involved.

(My OH is like you - makes lists, analyzes everything etc. We had a wonderful check list when we were house hunting. The house we bought matched none of the requirements! LOL. The list was scrapped. We went for the house we loved, and have been very happy here since.)

Guess what I'm saying, in a roundabout fashion is .... if it were me, I'd go for the NHS job - that seems to be where your heart is, and financially either job is an improvement on where you are now.

Re the cost of travel ... how about cycling part way and getting the train part way (with a season ticket)? Might be cheaper and less strain on your body and bike.

I would always go for a permanent job than a temporary one ... what will you think if you take the temporary one and then when the contract is up you can't find another one .... you will be cursing yourself for not taking the permanent job when you had the chance.

BTW my hubby has just changed from a temp to a permanent job and is currently 60p an hour worse off, but he has the security of a permanent job and the wage will rise the longer he is there and after training etc. short term loss for a long term gain.

Mitcham Junction is a 20-minute cycle from the house, and when I get to Dorking it's another 10-minute ride to work.

    Single fare: £4.90
    Return journey: £8.00
    Weekly: £33.50
    Monthly: £128.70

I could do the full round trip on two days, the car one day and the other two days ride into work only and take the train back. £9.80 a week x 4.33 = £43/month.

My wife needs the car, especially on her Fridays off (which she's negotiated with her work). During maternity leave she needs it to get around. She's used to her freedom and doesn't want me to get in the way of it, I suppose. It is her car.

I don't want to be searching for a job when she's on maternity leave either, though. Good point.

Now I'm really going for a walk.

I would look to ride share, which is something I thought of riding into work today.
