'Luther' is absolutely brilliant http://www.amazon.co.uk/Luther-Series-1-2-Box-Set/dp/B004P9MRLM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364321883&sr=8-1
Another vote for Friday Night Lights. Absolutely love it!
Is he too young for Homeland? That was amazing.
The Shadow Line also very good, another one that is a 15 but might be quite complicated for a 13 yr old to follow.
Hope you have a lovely time with your son!

Jericho was an instant one for me, I've ordered it from Zoverstocks via Amazon. My finger hovered over the Amazon Prime version as I want to watch it now but I have to have willpower. I think House of Cards looks great for myself and OH together. I have also ordered Greys Anatomy as a treat for DS but I doubt I'll watch it with him. I'm going to look further into one for both of us from all of the suggestions, I want to get it just right and have some fab ideas now.
I sound like a real TV addict but I don't really watch standard TV, we just watch what we fancy on DVD or internet.0 -

Yay! Another Jericho convert!
Come back and update when you've started watching it.0 -

Thank you! I've never heard of Friday Night Lights - that must be 5 recommendations for it. He's not into sports at all, is that the main theme?0 -
' don't really watch standard TV, we just watch what we fancy on DVD or internet.'...ditto. House of Cards is still excellent.
Cambridge Caf! runs loyalty card too - popping in with son might become another '2 of you' thing.
Were you ever hooked by 'Monkey' and 'Tales from the Water Margin'?
Think I'd better try Jericho and Friday Night Lights.

Sports is an obvious theme given that it centres around a football team but the game is a backdrop for the relationships of the characters who are either team members, cheerleaders, coaches etc as it's such a focus for the small town.
I have no real interest in sports (I'll watch odd matches or games of things on TV but wouldn't tune in for them) but it's mostly a human drama. It may help to have a basic understanding of American Football scoring (otherwise it's pretty much rugby but going forwards) but it isn't necessary (it just helps to know that a touchdown means they'll win or whatever - my boyfriend explains things to me).
I'm only working my way through the first season at the moment but love it. I didn't know so many others would have seen it though so I'm pleased to see the love for it on here!
If you're sceptical, try a netflix free trial for a month (if you aren't already using netflix) and have a free week's trial of Unblock US, that way you don't have to buy it.
ETA: Jericho and Gray's Anatomy are also on US netflix (not sure about UK netflix. You may find a lot of what you want on there (it's better than the UK version).0 -

In view of FNL commendations, strongly feel you'd all like Defrosting the Fridge, with the terrific Joe Don Baker.
Nothing wrong with feelgood factor, or similar others pre- and post-dating this one.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

I know you said no paranormal but... how about Carnivale? 1930's, last great age of magic, evangelical maniacal preachers. We loved it but it is a while since I watched it so a second opinion might be a good idea.
OH and I loved Carnivale but I think it might be a little too heavy for a young teenager ... there is sex, nudity and a fair bit of violence, and the second season is tough going story-wise. Not to mention the frustration of the 'end'!0 -
