and back on topic for this board, we've had a letter of interest from a developer through re planning permission for garden. We're tempted to give them a call and ask them how much it's worth. We can fit a house at the bottom of our garden and still have a big enough garden for SE.

We have those quite often. OH isn't interested in selling any part of the garden, I would consider it for the right offer, provided I could stipulate a building line not to near the boundary.

Is it loony to email the great-grandchild of your great-grandfather's youngest sister to say "Hi, we're related"? Too bad if it is, I just did it.

I emailed a 4th cousin once, he replied with the whole family tree dating back to 1820. I lost interest once someone else had done the work.

Has NDG been to the Anniversary Games? I heard on TV this morning that "a very eloquent female immigration barrister walked up and challenged Boris Johnson" about the mobile immigration hoardings.

It's something I've thought about, but then I've also thought about how anyone would get down there with a vehicle......

Especially in the area most of the NP are in, it does seem an attractive offer at the moment. Land around here is about £85k MissK, if that helps.

Many thanks' for the warm welcome that you have given me..

LydiaJ asked What kind of work are you doing on it?

The property dates to the mid 1960s and all three bedrooms had fitted wardrobes that were passed their best so we decided to remove them all which will take a few weeks to clear, also the carpets need replacing.

The kitchen although functional needs replacing as well, also we plan to have it extended by two metres and have new units fitted.

The bedrooms all have wood-chip wallpaper which has been painted over so this in itself is difficult to remove so we have the decorators to help with some of the work also we are waiting for the builders to start in a few weeks time on the kitchen extension.

I have made about six trips to the recycle centre with wood and carpets etc. with many more trips to come.

So my BH and I are very happy to have moved into our bungalow because since we left our previous bungalow on the 8th April we have moved from Caravans, B&Bs and Hotels with our furniture in storage, this has recently been delivered and is contained mostly in the garage and in a Gazebo which is in the garden. This give us chance to clear the rooms and redecorate before bringing in the furnishings.

I had better get back to the decorating before the BH returns from shopping, have a lovely day folks.

Glad you found a decent deal. Who with? Easiest thing may be to not cancel the old policy, nothing illegal about having two policies - though you can't claim on both.
It was under 1k for the three of us for two cars. OH did the research and the phone call that secured it. Result!

Do we use brand names on the thread? A maritime-themed agency not to far from the valleys did the honours. The phone call was the key- all the online quotes were ridiculous even using the comparison sites.

I've always been a customer of their large African herbivore brand. The one thing that everyone says about their insurance is that if you make a major claim (I.e. write off or theft) then they cancel the insurance and keep the outstanding premium whereas other insurers transfer the policy to your new vehicle.

This means that in effect you can end up paying the full annual premium for one day's insurance (which is why it is much cheaper than most other competitors). It is also exactly what happened to me when my car was stolen several years ago (albeit I was about 6 months through the policy then).

I have no idea whether other companies have transferable policies or not though as I have never insured elsewhere. They were very good about paying out my claim so I stuck with them.

When you come to renew, the particular brand you are using will not quote through price comparison websites but all the other brands operated by that group will and they usually come out cheaper so you just ring them up and give them the quote ref and they give you that deal.

My lot came from there. A trip up memory lane (for grandparent) and he couldn't believe how things had changed, I thought we were stepping back in time.

In the Rhonnda (sp?) valley the main road is so obviously an old railway track I kept expecting to see trains come round the corner!

Why not go back beyond 1820?

A chap I bowl with is club secretary, & got an email from yorkshire. On our bowls team roll of honours was 1 particular chap with the same surname. The yorkshireman was wondering if the guy was his great-grandfathers brother (he was - a branch of the family left yorkshire when he was a kid). Our chap is in his 80's, but still started sorting out names & addresses trying to help the guy with his family tree.

I was envious at the time.:o

Why are people not using brand names? We're not the bbc!

Dunno how the BBC get away with the constant stream of authors sitting on their breakfast news sofas promoting their books.... and film/theatre advertising their new film... etc
